Usually a combination of more than one utility is the best approach.
Spybot S&D, Spyware blaster and MS antispyware work for me. + FireFox

I use a combination of MS anti-spyware, spybot search and destory, and the lavasoft adaware. When all those fail, I use google.

got MS.. AdAware..Spybot S&D
plus got Ewido.. nice program.. not free.. but does pick up-6 stuff the otehr three don't I just try to get as much as possible off.. so yeah.. I wear aluminum foil hats and think the gov't is out to get me hehehehe |

I paid for Trend micro and Bullet proof..haven't had too many problems with spyware after that..I found Microsoft useless and didn't find incidents the others found
