Panhandlers real or not?
I was in NYC a few years back where a lady came up to me and said, "Mister, help me out. I'm hungry, my kids are hungry, we haven't eaten in a week. Give me a dollar so I can get them some food."
She looked strung out, but perhaps that she's just sick. It was a cold winter day in midtown Manhattan. I has just walked out of a pizza place with two large pizzas and was headed out to Long Island. I said to her, "I just spent my last $20 in there. Here's a pizza it will go a lot further than a dollar." She takes the pizza, looks and me and says. "I don't need your damn food, I need your money. F-you. F-you." She then threw the Pizza in the slush on the sidewalk. I couldn't believe my eyes. |

I used to live in LA and they did a news piece on the panhandlers that stand at the highway off ramps begging money while your waiting to go. They followed this one guy and he would park his SUV a few blocks away, changed into crappy clothes and went to do his days work at the off ramps. Later that day they followed him leave and change back into his nice clothes and head home to nice house. They said those fakers make somewhere between $100 to $300,000 a year. I doubt they are all fakers but I bet alot are.

Something similar happened to me when I was living in Chicago. I had a brownstone near Belmont and Broadway and I'm hoofing it to work one day (late as usual). I'm trying to catch a bus and the guy comes up to me and asks me for a cigarette. I have a Kool hanging out of my mouth, so even though I was late I thought I'd help the fella out. I stop, pull out the pack and flip the top of the box open to get him one.
He says, "Menthol? Forget it..." and walks away. Fucker ![]() |

I used to know a guy that would hand out business cards with the promise of a job to all the panhandlers in Houston that had the signs "will work for food". Of course, they didn't really want the work. They just wanted the money. He never once had anyone call him.

Last time I was in LA, I saw a guy wearing nothing but a garbage bag pushing a shopping cart full of junk down the street. I don't think he had any clothes on under the bag. He must have been doing that on purpose because there's no way he couldn't get some free clothes from somewhere.

A few years ago... I was at my stereo shop washing down the cutty when this homie (my term for homeless dude) asked for some change for coffee. This guy is a regular, we almost always shake him off, but instead I offer him coffee I already had made in the shop. He stumbles off and goes around the corner, later making his way back down the street.
He kept stumbling into traffic, and the road the shop is on has like 450k cars a day for traffic. He did fall in the street. He did get hit by a car, and he did die. So the news stops by and wants to interview everyone but noone wants to be in front of the camera, but they ALL want me to do the interview. So I agree and they roll camera... I said "This drunk comes stumbling down the street and asked if I had change for some coffee, so I told him "coffee? we don't sell coffee... we just sell the best quality car audio equipment at the cheapest prices you will find in the bluegrass" and that pretty much ended the interview. |
