Everybody is allowed here....

I find it interesting that Expo comes here and asks a simple question about photography and some of the people who could help him would rather talk down to him like he's a fucking idiot. Expo just spent a few days working with me in LA to help me hone my videography skills. When it comes to videography the boy knows his shit. But he's new to shooting pictures and that's why he's asking for advice from shooters here. Jesus fucking christ

I don't know Stevo... I never compared the two. You can download their free trial and test it out for yourself. I've been very happy with it as has some of my buds who use it.

I don't think anyone is talking down to him. if you are such a great mentor then why would he be asking such questions?
Is this thread bait to get a bunch of photographers to argrue about nitty gritty bullshit?

Sorry I assumed that you are a photographer and spent the day with him. I also assumed that he had some good info for you about video. Then I assumed that this general question could have been answered quickly by you. Then I assumed that this thread was just to get photographers to argue about rediculous details about equipment and styles, etc.

Sorry my friend....you assumed way too much. I did indeed spend the day with him...and I did answer some photography related questions for him. Apparently he still has some questions and was hoping that some of the good folks here could help him out....and although some were less helpful then they could have been, some were nice enough to offer some advice. Is there anything else that you assumed that I can set straight for you?

I gave my best advice on a very general question. Do you think that it was wrong?

Your best advice was telling Expo that he can't learn anything about photography on GFY and to spend more time with his camera? I'm sure that helped him out a lot

tip: if you have a cat or dog, they'd make excellent practice models for trying to figure out the best settings for shooting at various light conditions - they're always moving around, just like human models.

tip 2: it takes a lot less time figuring out the best settings yourself with digi cameras than asking about it on gfy. just shoot, change iso, shoot change iso, etc. etc. ...then compare the shots and make notes. picture is worth a thousand words.

tip 3: you can read all you want about the basics and photography tips, but in the end, everybody has their unique shooting style.

Hey what are the best settings to use with light coming through a window and should I use IS? I think spending some time with his camera was good advice. If he has a specific problem I would be more than willing to help. So what is your answer to his question?

There is no magic answer. IS will get you about 1-2 stops steadier than you are without. If you can shoot at 1/60 with a 50mm lens then it might let you shoot at 1/30 or 1/15 with the same results.
Why don't you just try it and see how it works for you?

Glad I could help you out with that little jewel Mark. I have a lot of cool little secrets like that. If you weren't such an asshole to me everytime you open your mouth, I might actually entertain the though of sharing some of that with you. Of course you could never learn anything from me huh?

What I say to and about others has nothing to do with you Marky. Why do you insist on sticking your nose in everybody elses business? Do you actually think anybody here needs you to protect them?

If I have something to say to you Mark I'll fucking say it. And unlike you, I'll say it here "and" to your face. You (my little keyboard warrior friend) don't mind calling people names on this board but when confronted with the opportunity to say it to their face, you run like the little pussy that you are. Yea, people really need someone like you to protect them from the big bad Dean Capture

Have fun my friend....protecting everybody from the big bad Dean Capture

I will say it to you're face to man, again stop trying to figure me out or thinking I am one way or another.

i'm trying to get more & more away from flash...or at least noticeable flash

the fundamentals of photography would have you use a flash so that you have enough light to shoot with a low iso, small aperature, and fast shutter - giving you an evenly lit, well exposed, tack-sharp photo.

problem is, that look (the common porn lighting of "2 strobes in umbrellas, flat light") is pretty boring

the model DOES NOT have to be super sharp in-focus from her head to toe...you want to make your pics intimate and recreate a real world fantasy: when the eyeball notices a woman in real life, your focus is only on the part you're looking at (be it her face, her breasts, her ass, etc) and the rest of her body is "blurred" by a falloff into the peripheral vision - shoot to duplicate that

anyway back on topic, i faced a lowlight situation over this weekend during my shoot...

i tried to make it look "natural" and bring a soft, dreamy feel to the photos...i didnt want to go below f/4 and shoot slower than 1/80, so i had to provide just a TOUCH of fill from a 48" softbox

(canon 20d; canon 24-70 2.8 "L"; iso 800; f4; 1/80)

Good job. watch out for your perspective and framing. If you are going to be so close then make sure it counts. What exactly are you trying to highlight? The face? Have an idea about what you are trying to do.

Mark....I don't need you to point out any mistakes that I make. Why don't you do that for someone who appreciates your help? If you want to help me..."and yourself"....keep your nose out of my business and don't say shit to me anymore about anything.

I don't know what kind of mental issues that you have bro' but you need to get that shit looked at. I make frequent trips to your neighborhood on a regular basis and I'll be glad to knock on your door and have a little face-to-face chat with you about whatever your problem is with me and we'll see if we can't figure out how to work this thing out. Sticking your nose where it doesn't belong is not going to resolve any issues that you have with me and in fact...will just make things worse. If you have a problem with me, with something I've said or something I've done, you contact me and discuss it with me. You can reach me via my website. Otherwise, I can guarantee you things will get ugly bro'.....very very ugly

Peace out -

You and Dean are both good guys, you should try to get along!

As for the IS on a tripod, is there a different mode for it? I thought you couldn't do that?

I have the 70-200 F 2.8, but I got it without IS so I really don't know. I have never felt I needed the stabilization on that lense. However I am sure there are a lot of things I could do with IS that I just don't know about yet.

I have the 70-200 2.8 IS lens but I never shoot on a tripod. That's the reason that I bought the lens....because I handhold everything I shoot and the internal stabilization is a god send for me. I often shoot at slower shutter speeds (to utilize available light) then I would if I didn't have the IS feature on my lens. Using the IS feature "and" a tripod together doesn't make much sense to me. Either one or the other will work fine

available light doesn't mean you cant supplement the source...this has been overlooked here for the most part but you can put lights outside the window, thus lighting through the window as natural light does.

I've shot a lot of low light situations along with flash as well..

The noise levels on the D70 suck, and I speak from experience, even at 400 is still hurts my photos... So i tend to strictly shoot 200 unless I need to.

I use Noise Ninja for most of my prints and anything that might get published in a magazine that might require it (subtle noise, maybe i bumped the RAW image too much and it created some noise)

Available light is hard to shoot, but done right can yield great results, but its best to use the fastest lens you've got, I tend to use my 50mm 1.4D Nikon when I need that extra stop. But like you mentioned before, you sacrifice overall focus of the image when you're shooting on a fully wide open F stop.

Here is a 50mm Prime shot of my best friends new wife, low light, she was actually squating down just before she was about to walk down the aisle (we're in a stair way)..

this is a shot with the same 50mm but with proper lighting indoors...

and again, the same 50mm using one portable light kit in an outdoor situation with a gold bounce..

The lens of choice should always be your fastest.

But remember, just because you can hold you camera steady, doesn't mean your subject can too.

Those are some great shots Mackey.

Gold Foil outdoors rules, they set a beautiful tone on a subject

Yea, it brings out tones that are normally hard to get without a little PS work..

Thanks for the compliment!
