(ie: yes, VH will be remembered and listened to in 50 years... assuming humanity survives that long)

Only in your world, amongst your friends, buddy. Keep rockin...
Again the ultimate self-contradiction is that a true art person recognizes art is in the eye of the beholder...

Rock music is an expression of the rebellious youth of the 20th century and regardless if you choose to support my comments....will not change...it is merely a fact.... as being one of the most successful introductions of art form in modern times... Eddie Van Halen, Eddie Grant, Eddie Money... it all fits the same mold in being Rock in general...which is an art form... a gritty street born version of art which ....if I am not mistaken Picasso..... is generally the art that has the power to transcend generations... the voice of a misunderstood generation of poets... our rock musicians and hip hop word smiths will be looked upon as art some day and there is nothing you can say or do to change that....

Since it is not your flavor, and obviously you are more concerned with posting little Hardee har faces laughing, is even more indicative of your shallow self-indulgent mirror staring ego obsession and not about "Art"

Your attempt at redemption came in weak, predictable, and without any substance of any true "Art Vulture" backbone.

As I said in my earlier statement, you are making comments that are simply being used to try and be the different one in the crowd... my guess is you are the kid that hates your dad and was probably a little bit of an introverted, over weight, feminine, Goth, loner, who has painfully and without success tried to find other jaded confused and insecure, sad, misguided youth to pin all the things that you try and convince yourself is wrong with pop culture...

and the reality is... you just simply never fit in...

So go and watch another indie foreign film, pontificate about painters you only know what your Jr. College taught you before dropping out...

And as far as trying to reduce me to being a "Rocker" go right ahead... you see I am not afraid to be who I am without feeling the need to cloak it with superficial claims of culture and class....

Back to work now... and for a person looking for work, I suggest you drop the pretentious art boy act... not a real office asset to be loner artsy I think I?m smarter than you guy...

Continue and take the opposite position that is fine it is simply a testament to your inability to know when to simply move on..that you are not the majority and that once again you will show the world how you are soooo different....

and here this is for you

Sorry buddy.

I grew up in new york doing dirt listening to biggy. I'm no introverted art boy. I never went to college.

Your assumptions are unfounded and desperate. Your taste in music is terrible. Your idea of art is starch and shallow.

You assuming that I'm trying to be in some kind of minority is a complete result of the closed in world you live in where everyone listens to garbage hair metal. I've not known one person in my life who listens to Van Halen, and I swear that on my mother. Matter of fact, the music you listen gave rock and roll such a bad reputation that's been stinking till 2005, that none of my friends listen to any rock music, because that's the only image of it they have in there heads so they automatically dismiss it.

And I know it's hard but when discussing music try not to take corny personal jabs at a 20 year old looking for some work. I never said anything bad about you, just Van Halen. They will be forgetten.

Try to stay on topic.

Havadude, if you hate the topic so much, why would you even click on such a repulsive thread? I don't get you.

It's like a bunch of guys talking about football on a thread in which the title clearly indicates it's about football, and some yutz comes in and posts "football sucks"

It's basically a thing that a dipshit would do. In fact I think that's where the term dipshit came from.

"Biggy"?

WTF is Biggy?

Is that that newage shit that the kids today listen to? I've never even heard of them. It must be the reason why kids today are so rebellious and mouthy to their elders. Has to be.

Try listening to real music.

Damn upstart kids with their insignificant opinions. I suppose Kiss, Motley Crue, Judas Priest, AC-DC, Nazareth and Led Zep are included in your scorching criticism?

:D

last post and then I have to move on...

The reality as CD Smith has pointed out... is that in a thread that has been started that is clearly a supportive thread...when you walk in and take the opposite position

a) You are free to do so

b) You should expect you would be equally as chastised for your perspective

I am much older than you and not that I think a 20 something is not capable of having sound opinion...but on this one you are simply taking the position of your own personal taste and making reference to a general, blanketed statement that this is not art.... myself among others simply refuse your opinion as we do not feel the same which through the course of history puts us more in line with being the types who appreciate art...I love all music as it is human expression which is art...even your beloved Boy George

Being wrong is human...being wrong with conviction is simply a lack of life experience

I like Led Zep!

My dad gave me Led Zeppelin IV a few years ago and I really liked the guitar work on that. It's not nauseating. I was actually fucking around tryin to play Black Dog last night before I went to sleep.

But the others...yeah..sorry. It's just not what I look for in music.

I'm not going to go on about myself anymore in public because you think I've got something to prove because I don't like what you like. If you'd like to exchange some views, let me know, I'll be glad to talk to you and explain why i like what i like and why i don't like i don't like. Take it easy.

Saw Van Halen on the 1984 tour at Maple Leaf Gardens in T.O.

Easily set the benchmark for all other concerts over the years. Had 6th row seating and got backstage passes along with a few buddies. An amazing night it was.

For fucks sake I don't listen to boy george.

I believe that I am indeed taking a position based on my personal taste, youre right. If you relate to that music, that's fine. I don't. That's it. My dad grew up on that shit and I still buy him tickets to see Deep Purple, the Scorpions etc. You're half right about my lack of life experience. In real life, I never bother arguing with people about music because no one ever wins. But on a messageboard it's still kinda tempting. Excuse me. I imagine with time I'll stop arguing about music outside of my interests altgoether.

To state that the music of VH isn't your cup of tea is one thing. To denigrate and discount the raw talent of a virtuoso like Eddie Van Halen is quite another. To try and support your position by purporting yourself as some morally superior art expert takes the stupidity a giant step further.

Fine, VH doesn't butter your bread, move along.

The difference in our taste is that I don't consider any virtuoso an artist. Just an athlete.

And about purporting myself as a 'morally superior art expert', that seems to be all in your head. It's a shame you insist on labeling instead of arguing the merits of the 'art' you love. I might not be the only one who needs to grow up.

Must've been memorable...history in the making.

Took two weeks for my hearing to return after the `84 concert
- total head buzz. It was great.

Next best concerts that came close was Boston at Kingswood (Third Stage tour) or perhaps Eagles 'Hell Freezes Over' tour at CNE Grandstand.

I still have a small concert pin ('No Bozos' clown) from the Van Halen Gardens show stuck to the sunvisor in my truck - from 1984.

This guy I know was hitchhiking in the Hollywood hills a few months ago when this guy in a pickup truck picked him up. They started talking about music and the guy says "Ever hear of a band called 'Van Halen'?". My friend said "yeah, of course". And the guy says, "That was my band. I'm Eddie Van Halen". Then he gave him some VH guitar pics. How freakin' weird is that?

I'm kinda glad it wasn't me. I'm not a big VH fan (although I did always like "Jump", I'm such a nerd). I would have probably said something really stupid like "Hey, why'd you let Valierie get away, man?".

Black Dog was the first 45 I ever bought all by myself as a kid in a record/head shop (as they all were). Has misty mountain hop on the B side. I still have it. It's on Atlantic label I think..

Theres a lot of perspective you get when you're older and remembering the music from "the old days" when *your* music was cool. Thats about it dude.

(if you ask what a "45" is, I'm gonna punch you, lmao)

That's just the point.... I don't have to argue the merits of the "art" you are so vehemently attempting to disparage, it stands on it's own. Go to any board anywhere on the web and start a thread titled "who are the best guitarists in all of music" and you will ALWAYS see the name Eddie Van Halen appear.

It's magic.

And lastly, one sign of maturity is having the ability to, although not liking a particular brand of music, to nonetheless be able to see the talent behind it. Case in point: I do not like 99% of country, but I can see the talent behind a few such artists and what pure entertainers some have become. To me the music sucks though, give me VH any day.... but I can acknowledge the talent. Can you?

Sounds like a scence out of that Howard Hughes movie, Melvin and Howard but in reverse

Theres a lot of perspective you get when you're older and remembering the music from "the old days" when *your* music was cool. Thats about it dude.

(if you ask what a "45" is, I'm gonna punch you, lmao)
Yes I DJ almost weekly, and I'm somewhat of a vinyl purist

That's terrible, come on. He may very well be an amazingly technical guitar player. But IN MY OPINION, that has nothing to do with being a good musician. It doesn't move me. And the shit about every messageboard? go to mtv.com messageboard and they'll swear by nickelback or linkin park...it's all relative. I'm not going to start telling you what music boards I frequent, but let's just say Van Halen and his like will get dogged rather bad in those parts.

I live by this rule and it's kept me openminded. It let me understand and appreciate the art and pain, and conviction in folk and country artists like Woody Guthrie, Johnny Cash, Dylan etc. when my friends were cocking eyebrows.

Well, on the one hand, Eddie doesn't look quite like he did back in the old days. He looks a lot different with short graying hair, a few more wrinkles and no tiger print spandex on. Heh heh.

On the other hand, my friend is not the brightest peg on the Lite-Brite.

There's your problem in a nutshell right there. You need new friends. :D

Seriously, I'm not sensing much openmindedness from you. Firstly, you swooped in here basically coming from the highly intelligent position "it sucks" ( ). After being met with the usual response such a post merits, you then revealed your true perspective, that of the moral/musical-expert denouncing the artistic merit of said artist (and he is an artist, like it or not).

And it IS all relative, as you said. If record sales count for something then Eddie is about as "up there" as it gets. If having a bajillion girls creaming themselves over you as you play while a bajillion boys wish they were you counts for something then the same is true. If having a few dozen tracks hit the top 100 charts over the span of nearly two decades counts then it supports the theory even further.

...and he was a pretty great backup singer. :D

Will VH have a following in 50 years? I likely won't be around to see it, but I hazard a good guess the answer will be yes. In guitardom history his name will be forever ranked high, and the mark of maturity here would be to learn from this and use it to develop the ability to adjust your ever-so-learned opinion a little, because what I'm saying is right.

Btw, what has the guitarist for "Biggy" ever done? Any meaningful impact happening there?

I am pretty sure the guitar in the pic was the one he assembled from various donor guitars. The story goes he tried different combos of parts till he got the sound he wanted,

He was quoted as saying that his guitar solos at times felt like he was falling down a set of stairs.

They did some great covers. Try and find a copy of Pretty Woman done by them. Awesome.

I keep my old loyal friends i grew up with and the musicians with whom i work seperate.

I'll give that to you. Sorry.

In my book not one of those things matter.

Whatever, neither of us can really tell, so I'll retract my statement that they will be forgotten in 50 years. I apologize for any arrogance that might've come across.

Biggy was the brooklyn rapper who got killed in 1997. I grew up listening to old rap music.

I remember readin' that quote years ago, yeah. But the quote at the time was actually Eddie describing what he thought Cream sounded like when playing "I'm So Glad".

So the story went - Ed used to listen to early Cream records and slow them down so he could pick out the chord progressions...same with early John Mayall stuff.

Among my favorite EVH quotes was how he often described his "brown sound". He'd say - "If it sounds good...it IS good. Who cares how its done..."

S.K.

my friend your missing the point - what eddie van halen did was change the course of guitar playing and basically launced a GENRE - you may not be a fan of his playing or the genre itself but you cannot deny the INFLUENCE his playing, tone, approach and style has had on modern guitar - and that my friend is one of the true marks of a real musician and an elite one at that.

your statements about music show me you arent a musican or a wannabe musicaian or a young guy maybe all three - in a a word - ignorant - sorry man but thats just how you read.

but i will say your mention of cash dylan gunthrie save your ass from total stupidity but are obvious defense choices so you dont get a pass.

@ you trying to give me credit

@ you believing someone needs 'defense choices' in their argument against Van Halen.

Who the fuck is modern guitar?

Who did that influence?

Spector's productions influenced Brian Wilson, I understand.
Muddy Waters songwriting and playing influence The Stones, I understand.
VU, David Bowie. MC5, The Stooges. Guthrie, Dylan. Parsons, Neil Young, Etc.

Where is the Van Halen influence? Who can I hear that respectfully carries on his 'ENTIRE GENRE'? Slipknot? Buckethead? The Darkness? Where are the modern active musicians that give Van Halen a nod?

Why is it that the only respect i see given to Van Halen is either from

a) the people who have nostalgic emotional ties to the music and era
b) aspiring guitar athletics virtuosos

I-N M-Y B-O-O-K....INFLUENCE? DENIED.

I never intended to come in here and discredit Van Halen. Don't try giving me shit. Maybe it's just me but some of you guys are looking really desperate and challenged, calling me shit, assuming what i like, assuming what i do. Smells of 10 year olds defending the fact that they ate their own boogers. I listened and it bored me. It's a messageboard, let it go. Don't be a lame.

All I know is, debating the merits of VH with a rap fan is like convincing a lifelong homo to change teams.

Both are futility personified.
