What is the minimum wage where you are?

Anyone live somewhere where there is no minimum wage?

Here it's currently set at $7.25 per hr.

When I started working back in the late 70's, min wage was less than $3 per hr. By 1985 it was around $5.

There are people that think the current minimum wage here is too low, and they want it raised to $10 per hour. I'm sure employers are shuddering over that as we speak, what do you think about such a large hike in the minimum wage? Is it a great idea or do you think people doing the "shit" jobs need to get some education and take some initiative instead of getting handed a 30% pay raise?

Please discuss...

If the minimum wage gets increased that just means all those other jobs that pay by the hour have to increase too.

Which in return makes everything cost more.

Its $7.25 and when I started working back in 76-77 it was $2.65.
It has come a long way since then, and so has the price of everything else.

$15-16 per hour here in Denmark.

But remember we pay about 50% income tax, 25% VAT, $7 per gallon of gas and so on, so its hard to compare the wages. Same thing with Norway.

People, the question is..... look at your current Minimum wage in your area, then consider giving them a 30% RAISE to that minimum wage because a bunch of people, say, people who are with some anti-poverty group for example, think that your current minimum wage is too low.

What is your opinion on raising the minimum wage 30%?

Any thoughts on the impact on your economy as a result of said increase?

I'm sure any minimu wage workers out there would love the idea..... but employers on the other hand.....

I was in Swizterland in april and the minimum wage was in the $17 area. Intersting thing is the meal at McDonals was about $11-12. I live in MN and our minimum is $5.25 or so and so is a meal at McDonalds.

i would be for raising the minimum wage 30%, but how would you regulate inflation?

if you could stave off inflation, and pay these people a living wage i think things would be alot better. i believe you would have generally happier workers and better service/products.

Like I said earlier if you increase the minimum wage all the other jobs that pay by the hour also have to increase.

Why would somebody haul bricks as a construction laborer when they can flip hamburgers at the same rate.

What happens as a result is that its going to cost more to build your house, car, cook your hamburger, etc.

Which means it will cost more to buy.

i had to look it up but its 7.45 (CAD) here in ontario. personally i think min wage should be determined by cost of living. those who live in big cities where rent is insane like toronto would get more than those living in small town where rent is cheap, etc.

As kenny basically said above, wouldn't raising the minimum wage only serve to increase inflation?

How do you stave off something that is an inevitability as a result of the increase?

kenny is right. If your minimum wage is at $7.25 and you're making $9 per hour on your job..... then they raise the min wage to $10/hr, you're not only going to get a raise up to the minimum but you would want to be paid more. Why? Because at the old minimum wage you were $1.75/hr above it, you were thinking "hey, at least I'm not being page minimum wage, I'm worth more"....

After they raise up the minimum there would be 1000's such workers wanting to make the same scale of pay. They'd be wanting $11, $12, $13.50 etc. People who were making $15/hr before the increase would want a raise too, and so on and so on.

Is minimum wage really set so that people can comfortably live on it? I always thought of it as the minimum.... and since I was never happy with the minimum I worked smarter and eventually found my way to earning more than twice the minimum wage, then 3 times it..... etc.

I think a 30% increase to the minimum wage is too much, personally.

I'm not fond of the minimum wage. I believe more in free enterprise, I think things usually work out in a competitive environment. Some agree, some disagree, thats just my opinion.

Minimum wage was originally created so that people could make a living. What wasn't figured in was single parent families, multiple children, and a million other variables. The idea behind minimum wage no longer applies. Now minimum wage is typically for high school kids, college students, retired people looking for something to do, and the people who have no desire to work just a little bit harder to better their lives. The first 3 groups of people I mentioned get by fine, the 4th group has a little more difficulty and it has nothing to do with the money they don't make.

I'd like to see a rise in the minimum wage with employers given a commensurate tax reduction, so the $$$ comes out of government instead of the business.

Much like unions now, state mandated minimum wage rates actually hurt those it purports to help.

If everything was ran like a merit shop and purely incentive based, employers would get more bang for their buck, go-getters would make more money and the slackers would finally get paid what they are worth.

Mininum pay here in Mexico is 5$ a day!!!!

A secretary with skill makes about 100 to 120$ per week. 4 yeard grads like engineers make about 300$ a week, if they are lucky. Most will pull about 225 a week.

And accountant makes about 190 to 250 a week.
