For those of you that like French film
Check out "À la folie... pas du tout" (He Loves Me... He Loves Me Not). It is a couple years old but I just now got done watching it. I was suprised that I liked it as much as I did as the trailer wasn't fantastic. It has a Audrey Tautou (Amile) in it. For my money she is one of the most beautiful women in any cinema.
Anyway, I know there are a few fellow lovers of world cinema here so hopefully someone gets something form this post |

Okay..so the next film I put on is Spanish - called Butterfly Tongues - and is a ton better than the French film. Very enchanting, very beautiful.

Irreversible. It is not a Audrey Tautou movie but it is a great strong french movie (Monica Bellucci at her best).

French cinema as a whole, excluding a few notable exceptions, has become rather dull and monotonous over the past few decades. Generic "art films" with no real artistic or philosophical value whatsoever have mostly replaced genuine experimental film, turning French cinema into a bland and repetitive farce. Like the French economy, it just lacks that creative spark that makes films fun.
Ofcourse, if you don't watch many films, it isn't all that bad, because the concepts and dialogues being repeated over and over again in slightly different forms are fairly good. The lack of originality only becomes really offensive when you are exposed to it too often. It's a sad fact that one who wants to watch some original and authentic French films is still best off with the likes of Godard and Renoir.

Well, that is much the same with any nation's cinema. I watch a lot of world cinema and each nation/region ahs its own style and when their films become popular they sometimes sit back and go into autopilot. Hollywood being the prime example, of course. Also, each nation has its good and bad. I have seen some truly bland French films and some fantatic French films. I have noticed lately that their are a lot more 'traditional' films than art films reaching the world cinema market from France. This one was sort of a mix of an art film and a traditional film and it worked for me. btw..I still say that South/Central America is the most exciting region for cinema at the moment. |

hey L'appartement was the one that starred Monica Belucci and was adapted in Hollywood as Wicker Park with Josh Hartnett. I have not seen the French movie yet. anway, Amelie was a very good film.

Do you have any idea of how many " so called " american films are actually remake of french films ???? No, I'm not talking about " Dumb & Dumber" or " Spider man " .... that's is pure american..... Now, Renoir & Godard are great, and it some happens that they obtain notoriety in the US, so you mention them... But what about Tavernier, Labro, Renais, Varda, Sautet, and so on ....

![]() You will laugh your ass off!!!! ![]() Classic Girl wants married man. Girl gets married man. Girl gets punched out by the man she marries to replace married man. Girl gets pregnant and smokes. Ending is surprising!!! ![]() Sorry I have a thing for Children's shows!!! Catherine Frot is just such a sweetie But sadly, for the most part, I have to agree with your assesment of French Cinema. More often then not, it is one LONG and DULL art flick that doesn't really go anywhere. What I'm hooked on is Japanese cinema! And I don't mean the damn kung fu movies. |

My flatmate is majorly into Japanese and Chinese cinema so I have seen a lot over the last year or so. Japanese cinema is suffering from the same Hollywood remake syndrome as French cinema has in the past. The Japanese do 'creepy' horror very well and it just gets destroyed when Hollywood glosses it up. |
