Yeah, if the cat has lived in the same house for a while, it will usually come back on it's own (unless your sister lives on a busy street, then it's high probability for it to become roadkill). It's not unusual for boy cats especially to be gone for a couple of days. But you should definitely have your sister call the shelters and pounds in the area because if it possibly was picked up and taken to a shelter, they only have to keep them for 3 days before they either put them up for adoption or euthanize them if there is no room in the shelter.

On another note, I lost my cat for 11 days and just got him back on Sunday. I posted an ad in the newspaper and posted signs around the neighborhood, and eventually somebody saw him about 6 blocks away and recognized him from a sign and called me. If your sister's cat doesn't come home within a couple of days, she should definitely start taking action.

That's sad since I have indoor cats and I would fear this happening. Best of luck to your sister.

SHEMP: oh wow, that long eh did it just show up on your door?

Missy: it is a boy cat. and at first, he hung out in front of the apartment building but then overnight, ran away. she already contacted the shelters but she hasnt started with the flyers yet (i'll tell her to do that tomorrow). luckly, the cat has claws so it can hunt & defend itself, thats the good news.

i just feel so bad for her

None of them ever ran away. They usually just lay there and accept it.

I would assume they usually always come back unless it's out of their control. As in something happens to them, car, dog, poison. Or if someone picks them up, takes them home, to the shelter, etc.

aww hunny im so sorry!!
i have a cat that is my BABY, i'd be crushed for years if he ever got out. he actually did one morning, but he was on the balcony, he was there ALL NIGHT (the wind pushed the door to the patio open). either he was too scared to climb or didnt wanna leave. but my heart jumped out of chest when i couldnt find him & i saw the door was open.

i really hope you find your cat!!!

Man weird. On Monday my wife signed for a UPS package and thought she had closed the door. We both took an hour nap and when we woke up the front door was cracked open and our two cats were chillin' on the front walkway... I guess they are home bodies!

I feel bad for her too. It hurt my heart so bad every day that my cat did not come home, and every day I lost a little more hope. But like I said, it's not uncommon at all for male cats to take off for a couple of days and roam around trying to get some; most neutered cats don't even realize they don't have any manhood left. But if he's not used to being outside, he can easily get disoriented and unable to find his way back home.
She should check the pound and shelters at least every other day; just because he is not there today doesn't mean he may not end up there tomorrow or the next day. And make sure that the flyers she posts have a good color picture of the cat with a brightly colored background that will attract people's attention.

Petfinder.com is a good place to check too. It's mostly for adoptable pets, but it has a classifieds section for both lost and found pets, and you can narrow your search to your specific area, and Petfinder links to all of the participating shelters in the area. It also provides good tips and helpful methods of finding lost pets.

Yeah. Ran away, came back, was wild, couldn't even pick it up. It was fucked up. Then it ran away, it didn't even come back for the food we would leave out for it.

I've had him since the day he was born. I don't know what I would have done if I hadn't got him back!

BTW, a really good tip that I read (and that I used myself) is that you print the color photo on white paper so that the picture/color comes out accurate, and cut it to like 2 inches shorter than a standard piece of paper. So instead of 8.5 x 11, cut them to 6.5 x 9. Then tape those onto the ultra-bright papers to draw attention, and then here's the imporant part... slip those into plastic page protectors (or you can laminate them, but that's a lot more expensive). But that way they don't fade or curl when they get wet. Without that protection, even the dew from the morning will curl the papers to an unreadable state.
I know I sound like a total geek, but when it comes to my babies, I will do anything to help increase my chances of getting them back. It took me hours to make these posters, but in the end, that's what ended up getting my Little back, so it was well worth it

Well I started just in my neighborhood, and then as each couple of days passed I expanded my radius. I actually didn't post them on the busiest intersections, but on the smaller streets that lead onto busy streets, where people actually sit for a minute waiting to turn onto the busy streets. And of course if you have like sub-divisions with only a couple of ways in and out, you want to be sure to hit all of those intersections. I put most of mine on stop signs, and also on community mailboxes. Also, most of the stores I asked wouldn't let me post flyers in the store because "we're corporate and would have to get permission and blah blah blah..." so I'd find a lamp post or telephone pole right off their property to post them on those where lots of foot traffic would see them.

My cat ran away and was gone for two months, we finally caught her outside, right in our front yard in the bushes.

I lost both of my cats on the same night a few years ago. The coyotes had to have gotten them as I lived pretty far out. I cried and cursed a god I don't believe in for 3 days then went to the pound and adopted an 8 year old sweetheart named Cacina Bean. I hope her cat comes back, but if it doesn't be sure to tell her to adopt a senior cat, as they are hard to place, and will most likely be put to sleep. Plus you have a good feel for their personality. Where as the sweetest kitten can turn into the biggest asshole cat.

I had a little female cat who was gone for 8 months and just showed back up one day. Another time, I moved from 1 house to another about 10 miles away. My cat got out the first night I was home and took off. A month later, my old neighbors called to tell me he was outside my old house. That was 12 years ago. He is now 19 and still pluggin away. Had other ones who got out and were never seen again. Just try to make up some posters with his pic and offer a reward and get them out anywhere you can.

Wow... that sucks. Cats usually come back unless you're a shitty pet owner and beat it or they're dead...

That's a beautiful cat.

In my past experience, yes they do. Hell, I had a newly adopted dog from the shelter that was really skiddish and got away from me after only a week and he showed up at my door 3 months later. No shit. Animals have amazing instincts. I assume someone took him in and he got out and returned to me. He was well fed during is little vacation.
