i just feel so bad for her
I feel bad for her too. It hurt my heart so bad every day that my cat did not come home, and every day I lost a little more hope. But like I said, it's not uncommon at all for male cats to take off for a couple of days and roam around trying to get some; most neutered cats don't even realize they don't have any manhood left. But if he's not used to being outside, he can easily get disoriented and unable to find his way back home.
She should check the pound and shelters at least every other day; just because he is not there today doesn't mean he may not end up there tomorrow or the next day. And make sure that the flyers she posts have a good color picture of the cat with a brightly colored background that will attract people's attention.

Petfinder.com is a good place to check too. It's mostly for adoptable pets, but it has a classifieds section for both lost and found pets, and you can narrow your search to your specific area, and Petfinder links to all of the participating shelters in the area. It also provides good tips and helpful methods of finding lost pets.
