LOL, what makes you think that Satriani or Vai cant play that just as good?

He is good, but no way near the greatest, also some stuff doesnt add up, he migt have recorded some parts that he played wrong afterwards......

At one point in time or another, I've had a guitar owned and played by all of these guys in my hands.

I still suck.

the playback on the first video: there is a guitar effect used there - some kind of harmony generator or pitch....something that makes the guitar sounds like 2 guitars in different octave....it's a very famouse effect used in heavy metal, mostly in the 80's...what is that effect called? some one know what I mean?

Judging and rating guitarists really is subjective. For example my favorite guitarist, because of his inventiveness and expressiveness, is Jimi Hendrix, however Jimi was unorthodox in every way. He played left-handed, and strung his guitar upside down.

I am such a fanatic that I own the same guitar that he often played:

Right on! I have that same Strat for the VERY SAME reasons

Hendrix was WAY ahead of his time.

As for this "greatest player in the world video"...while he is very good, many of his notes were flat, especially his bends. I watched the vid a couple times and counted no less than 10 notes that he TOTALLY missed.

So...no...the guy in this vid is not even CLOSE to the greatest. Listen to Hendrix, or Stevie Ray, or Clapton. Or for other styles, Al Dimeola and Paco de Lucia. These guitarists understood how to bring their guitars to life.

aye aye ugh............. If you were looking for new guitar based music to listen to all you had to do was ask.

The best ever- No.

The kid may be able to play his guitar. ( vid looked a little off) And from your comments I take it you do not play. ( which is cool) I can not speak for the generation after me. ( I'm in my mid-30's) But I can't think of many guitar players in the 80's that couldn't have shredded all over that song, you would have been hard pressed not to hear something just as impressive in any guitar shop on a saturday morning during the 80's and early 90's.

I agree with most of the comments in this thread.

Via, Beck, Hoey, all great players.

Grab a copy of anything Via if this was good for you. Eric Johnson and Satriani while your at it.

I would'nt normally say it but even Malmstein would be something you would enjoy.

with all that said, if the kid was playing the music in the video he can play the guitar. Nothing more , nothing less. I was far more impressed with the kid playing the nintendo music on his guitar, it was much more difficult to play.

If there's a single best all-around guitar player, it's Al DiMeola.

People also mentioned John McLaughlin and Paco de Lucia... I'd rank them up there, and in fact, there are a couple of albums by what's called the "Guitar Trio" that are probably the absolute pinnacle of amazing guitar collaborations, and the trio is Al DiMeola, Paco de Lucia, and John McLaughlin.

you cannot say who the best is, ever

nobody likes the same exact shit as someone else, and music isnt a contest or sporting event, so "the best guitar player" does not exist now nor will it ever exist. Its like arguing about politics or religion.

No mention of Eddie van halen is a disservice to the guitar community. I think alot of industry professionals who have been around a long time would say he is damn near the top. Obviously music being subjective. Much honorable mention must go to some of the following axe men

Malmstein
George Lynch
Michael Schenker

and a few others not mentioned

There's a couple:
Octaver (used to either create a second guitar but up to a few octaves down, or to make the actual guitar sound octaves lower w/o having to tune down the strings)
Harmonizer (dual guitars effect sounds, prolly what you were referring to)
Pitch Shifter (name says it all)

Some multi-effects processors allow you to mix these effects as well.

Anybody heard of Marty Friedman and Jason Becker (played together in Cacophony)?
