I don't care where you live, but this thread could really save your life. (pic)
Those of you that think your government is prepared to immediately come to your aid in the event of any type of natural disaster are not paying attention. I am sorry if it took Katrina to get the message through to you.
Displayed below is a survival pack that will insure I can go 3 days without having to worry about FEMA or anyone else pulling my ass out of the fire. I have had one for close to 25 years. I suggest you do the same, it is very cheap insurance. ![]() |

Good call. I'm prepared too, except for I went as far as having two weeks worth of supplies.

Yup.
It's really as simple as being ready to go camping for 1-2 weeks at any given moment. Just have everything needed for camping ready and stored in a sensible place. And I dont' mean the pussified camping with electricity and indoor plumbing. I mean roughing it 100% camping... like if you don't remember to pack asswipe you're using leaves.

A .45 is too large. 9MM or .40 cal would do just as well, and you could carry more bullets. Or a 12 guage shotgun with birdshot would be the best IMO.
The Mormons go for a year supply of all that. Some even have it down to just one closet. (my mother and sisters are Mormon. Pity me.) Do increase it from 3 days. It took FEMA that long to get their act together, and another week before they were in any way effective. |

Also people, don't forget your animals. They'll need food and water too.

Don't forget to pack a magic marker for your signage needs also.

That is great advice and something I've been meaning to do for awhile now. Do you know where you can pick up a survival pack like that? I think I can get MREs at the local Army-Navy store, but the other stuff I don't know about.
I think another important thing is to make sure you have survival stuff in your car as well. This is especially important if you live up North like I do. You never know when you'll be stranded in a car or need to evacuate an area right away. It is important to carry flashlight, blankets, water bottles, food, and a gallon of gas in the trunk. |

I think I'll open up my own flood survival store in New Orleans.

Failing that, a outdoor store can help you out. Tell them you are going for long distance hiking away from civilization. They will get you the MINIMUM stuff you need for two weeks on your back and on foot, wihtout trying to sell you the crap that is "guarenteed to keep you alive". One thing about the MREs, they are designed for active army types, who are on their feet, humping their packs and about 40 lbs of other geer like grenades, amunition and their rifle. Those things have about 3000 calories in them and it's rumored that there are chemicals in some of the food to deliberately constipate you. They are for high-energy use. So if you anticipate sitting in one place for a long time munching on them, you may want to look at some of the hiker's meals instead of the MREs. I did this and had a nice collection of stuff, so feel free to drop me a line at sub.eric (at) blackrosefloggers.com and I can see what I can do to help steer you guys in the right direction. |
