Windows XP - Please say it isn't just me

Ok,

I've had this operating installed on several different computers in my home.

Different setups and software on the machines too.

I've several different copies have been used. (Both OEM and Registered and some not so squeeky clean)

And all systems routinely HANG and send me the fatal "PROGRAM NOT RESPONDING" followed by the "Send Error Report."

Somebody please tell me it isn't just me. That I'm not the only person that gets these problems. Not a single day passes by without this happening.

have you done all the windows updates to get the latest service pack/etc?
I've got XP pro running on a few computers and w2k on the rest and have had no problems with xp. w2k is getting really tired though.

Is it the same program that crashes on all machines, or does it happen with different types of software on the different machines?

Everything is up to date. Absolutely everything. The computers are by the book and by the numbers for setup and maintanence.

A few things:

Pro is far more stable than Home. Home is notoriously wonky.
Make sure you have your paging file set on a drive that isn't being used a lot and won't interfere with program function. Like the last drive in your list.
Make sure you have enough RAM. Try a proggie like CacheManXP (it's free) to show you how much ram you're actually using and to recover ram from closed programs.
Try defragmenting everything.

We thought of that about a month ago. Different software, different machines.

Even thought it was the electricty.

Moved countries several times. Nope.

Not even similiar hardware archetecture.

The only thing these machines have in common is XP.

Using Pro.
Page file set on last drive.

Each machine has at least 1 gig of ram if not more.

Used various versions of progs like CacheMan

Defrag the drives.

Defrag the system registeries.

All done. Many times.

That is very strange. The only thing the computers have in common, then, is the network. Try a different brand of router/switch/whatever you're using. Use new cabling while you're at it. See if that does it maybe.

Windows 2000 Server Edition is the best OS I have ever used. Too bad there is some compatibiility issues with some stuff. I have Win2k on my desktop and XP on my laptop that no longer works...go figure.

Only 2 out of the 7 are currently networked.

I'm going to pick up a copy of Win2K again. Because this is just stupid.

No, this is not normal.
Think of what the computers have in common. What programs are running when they lock up?

Intel chip sets work much better with XP. I have 6 PCs and have yet to get a blue screen. XP is a closed memory protect system and you may be running software that is trying to reach the ram space directly. This will kill you every time.

Very, very strange. Are you sure all the copies of WinXP are valid? If they aren't validated properly, Windows Update can kill them. Honestly I can't think of anything else except somehow a virus got between them all?

Or if you bought the computers from the same supplier, maybe you got a bad batch of RAM in a few of them and you keep hitting holes in the RAM. ?

I have never had luck with XP and the copy I'm currently using is right off the shelf of Futureshop. (I thought it might have been the "other" copies I was using. - It wasn't.)

There is no virus, they all have Intel inside them.

There is no rhyme or reason to why we have this problem with XP. We used to have computers with Win2k running on them and never had a problem.

I'm only posting this because today I wanted to access one computer with my files and couldn't make Word open. So I had to burn a CD to do it on another machine. Which worked perfectly.

But I'm sure it won't tomorrow.

I'm just going to track down a copy of Win2K. And after this I'm going to look into a copy of "non-power" user linux. (Something that will allow me to run all windows products.)

Then after that, we are going to migrate to Macs.

hehe, man, don't blame XP, the fault is on your side, whatever that fault might be

I have Intel, AMD, and even one Celeron older than Pathfinder running XPs, never ever had a problem

ok, I lied, I had a problem once, when I tried to upgrade the RAM on one of my PCs, this is the first and the last time I saw a 'blue' screen on XP, I had two RAM chips that were incompatible

"PROGRAM NOT RESPONDING" means that some program is not responding I guess, download a sotware that shows you ALL the programs that are running in the background
and see what that program is, my guess would be virus/trojan - update your antivirus and scan, scan also for every shitware you can think of

I think XP is one of those operating systems that either works perfectly for some people or is pure shit for others.

So, yes your right. My first mistake was going with XP. Should have stayed with what works. Win2K

I have exactly the same problem as you. Different machines, different XP's and ALL hang and give errors. We have to reformat pretty often and I am seriously considering putting Windows 2000 back on all the machines.

No updates help, defragging doesn't do anything, repairing with the cd doesn't help.....
