America, Land of the Free?

I was sitting in a hotel in Amsterdam, the Netherlands when I heard the news about Congress jamming new opresssive legistation regulating what American adults can do in the homes, their business and their lives.

I took a walk to think it through, I passed churches, shops, marijuana selling coffee shops, absenthe in liquor stores, pornography in a flea market and in shops, prostitutes in their red light window; they are all accepted by the Dutch. Their society is tolerant of all styles of life so long as your lifestyle does not adversly effect another.

Why in the country that claims to be the beacon of democracy, the model for the world; why in the USA, are we being forced into a single mold?

The America I learned about in school was a beacon of opportunity and freedom for the world. Why in our America can we not be allowed to be free responsible adults?

Why in our America does the Republican Party, the party that traditionally stands for individual rights and States rights using federal laws to sieze my rights. Barry Goldwater would be in tears if he saw what has become of his party.

What happened to the America I thought we lived in? The erosion of individual liberty is accelerating and if we the people do not petition our legislators to stop it the land of the free will become a story we whisper to our children so no one else hears our sedition.

Write your congressman, call your congressman, email your congressman. They them you want the right to live your own life as an adult and do not require the government to tell you what to do. If the Dutch can do it why can't Americans?

And you know what, the Dutch dont talk about freedom all fucking day. We have freedom and we dont talk about it. Its normal thing to have. The US is far from the "land of the free" yet everybody has to keep mentioning it.

America always was and probably always will be run by religious fanatics in one way or another. This is the land of the free, as long as the God fearing, hypocrites are in power. The Constitution has never been fully and openly allowed, condoned, executed, and/or believed in by our government. They have always made rules up as they went along. If something was wrong in their eyes, they'd make a law against it or an amendment. This country has never been free by the definition many of us were led to believe it was. Many of us have not realized it until now. The US is not about freedom, it's about money, assets, and power. Each branch of government and individual citizens are all cogs in the monster of greed and wrath.

America is the land of opportunity, IF you play by their rules or manage to fly under the radar. Basically, you're allowed to be rich but you aren't allowed to engage in ungodly social and personal behavior.

The same thing happened to Hitler.

Hitler was on his way to being an Artist. The man that taught him about Art and painting was brutally stabbed to death.

Now I wonder what Hitler would have become if that did not happen.

Can you give some examples of "ungodly social and personal behavior" that isn't allowed in the US that should be?

Well, lets see... every single state has ancient laws against many sex acts, such as anal sex, oral sex, sex with socks on, etc etc. Gay and lesbian marriage should be legal and recognized by both the state and federal government. Stem cell research and a slew of other things that should all be within our adult rights.

I don't smoke marijuana but I don't believe it should be illegal. Tobacco is legal and kills thousands a year. Marijuana is a drug just like alcohol, tabacco, and prescription drugs, but it doesn't have any harmful or lethal side effects like tabacco and alcohol, yet they are legal and marijuana is not.

Can you give some reasons why all of these things are illegal, other than being deemed "immoral"?

I don't think it's a matter of things being allowed or not. Just the Government, and alot of religious fanatics being very invasive, intrusive and judgmental of everyone else's life but thier own. Even when it doesn't affect them or hurt anyone at all. Allowed or not that's an infringment on your freedom.
I've lived in the US for three years and love the Country, love the People, but I still can't wait to get back home, where I can honestly breathe a little easier.

Many states have ancient laws for all kinds of strange things, but these are not enforced. How could an anal sex law ever be enforced anyway? It's impossible without violating privacy laws. Also it is not true that every state has laws against these things. Stem cell research is not illegal.

Drugs are illegal, but they are illegal in most countries in the EU also. If smoking weed is so important to you then move to Canada or Holland and smoke it all day.

This is the best you can come up with? Pretty weak...

Though it is just a minor footnote. During the Vietnam war the same case was argued and the drinking age was lowered in several States to 19, some like NY were 18. As the fear mongering about druck driving increased the Feds mandated a national increase to 21 or States would loose highway funding.

Furious_Female comes up with a precise point, and this is all you have .... Move to Canada ???

Now " how can anal sex law be ever enforced anyway " ... Again, you show not only your ignorance but your laziness :

Quote:
In the well-publicized 1995 Virginia case, Bottoms v. Bottoms, Sharon Bottoms lost custody of her son Tyler to her own mother, Pamela Kay Bottoms. Even though Tyler?s father had no objections to having Sharon raise their son, Pamela Bottoms successfully invoked the sodomy laws of Virginia to prevent Sharon Bottoms from raising her own son. Pamela Bottoms cited the Virginia sodomy law to identify Sharon Bottoms as a habitual felon under the Virginia sodomy law, using the classification of Sharon Bottoms as a criminal to further object to the imagined harm that might be done to the boy as a result of his being raised by a lesbian. The child was placed in Pamela Bottoms? custody.
So you can now say this is only one case ....

You are a worthless adversary, SHITOVITCH...

by what standards should dictate illegal. Although it is a Joke the US is supposed to have a seperation of church and State. Why is it a joke? The US is a Christian Country, it's legal and moral system are Christian. Therefore we legislated religous doctrine into law. Examples, probably the most memorable was Prohibiton, making alcohol illegal was legal impostition of a religous movement.

Next point currently illegal, how about currently legal but unconstitutional.

1. Seach warrants issued by a secret court, allowing secret searches
2. Administrative search warrants issued by and for the FBI
3. accessing library files of what books you have read

Those are on the federal level, there are more humorous examples of State laws.

Finally read the new amendment to 2257 that has past the house and see if there is chill to free speech.

Agreed; but also fear mongers have great power in that they scare the ignorant masses which mobilizes them. This is hard to do from the intellectual side so even those who are active have a big hill to climb.

Where it is a constant subject, whether on "freedom" or much else, the chances are there is a problem underneath.

It's like an individual who keeps saying you should trust him - chances are he's the last person to trust. Otherwise why mention it?
