Black Rock City is roughly 100 miles north of Reno.

A lot of people will fly to Reno and drive in. You can always pick out the *burners* on the plane.

For those with deep pockets, BM has it's own airport. You can land your small single engine planes directly on the playa. If you're feeling really adventurous, you could sky-dive right into the festival. Each year I see nearly 100 dives.

After seeing these pics, and thanks to Hal & Tassy, i checked out the burning man FAQ's. I gotta go next year. Simply brilliant. I've never seen anything like this.

When i first heard of this, i new it to be a rave of sorts, this was years ago and it didnt really catch my attention. But now....all i have to say is brilliant.

Remember the game "Simon"?

Well... this installation was inspired by that famous memory game of the mid 70's.

Although, the artist wrote his own code to make the thing work and I have a feeling this version was a LOT more distracting.

Fire would come out of one of the four corners. It was you job to stand in the middle and make the fire come out of the same corner. First one, then two, and so on...

I never saw anyone get past 5 or 6! Maybe it was just too hot for them.

This was cool too.

This was a giant flower that was attached to the cherry picker of a mobile crane. It would move slowly around the playa and reach about 30 feet into the air, appearing to "look around" and bend down to greet you. It would change colors constantly. It was a very cool idea in its application.

A new employee of Paycom just walked up to me and asked if I was the one that just got back from Burning Man. After confirming this, she told me that although she wasn't there that one of her teachers had an art installaion there. Guess what it was?

The ladder.

For those of you that have followed this thread you know that "the ladder" really impressed me. Turns out that an employee at Paycom will introduce me to the man who put it together.

BURNING MAN WITHOUT THE MAN
(or how to experience Burning Man without going to the Playa)

Tear down your house. Put it in a truck. Drive 10 hours in any direction. Put the house back together.

Invite everyone you meet to come over and party. When everyone leaves, follow them back to their homes, drink all their booze, and break things.

Buy a new set of expensive camping gear. Break it.

Stack all your fans in one corner of your living room. Put on your most fabulous outfit. Turn the fans on full blast. Dump a full vacuum cleaner bag in front of them.

Pitch your tent next to the wall of speakers in a crowded, noisy club. Go to sleep. Wake up 2 hours later in a 110 degree tent.

Buy a new pair of favorite shoes. Throw one shoe away.

Only use the toilet in a house that is at least 3 blocks away.
Drain all the water from the toilet.
Only flush it every 4 days.
Hide all the toilet paper.

Pay an escort of your affectional preference to not bathe for five days, cover themselves in glitter, dust, and sunscreen, wear a skanky neon wig; dance closely naked with you, then say they have a lover back home at the end of the night.

this is perfect! i love it, it doesn't explain why it's all worth it to do very similar things on the playa - but it does explain why going to burning man is not *just* a party or a big music event. it's a survival event, and an experiment in community. beautiful. did you write this rand, i'd like to copy it/link to it if i may.
