Rand's Pic's From Burning Man 2005 )'(
This was the best year so far. Lot's of big art came back. The weather was nearly perfect. These images are a little large, I know. They are snap shots I took with an old 2.1mp Sony Cybershot. http://randomania.net/BM05/BM.jpg http://randomania.net/BM05/DSC06809.JPG http://randomania.net/BM05/DSC06834.JPG http://randomania.net/BM05/DSC06862.JPG http://randomania.net/BM05/DSC06866.JPG |
man i missed it. :(
with the launch of rage so close to this, it just wasn't possible. i didn't even dj this year like i normally do on labor day weekend. looking at these pics makes me glad one of us got to make the pilgrimage. :thumbsup |

LOL the lifesize moustrap was fucking awesome.
I would have loved to have seen that up close |

It used bowling balls in place of the marbles used on the board game. |
lol Rand, great pics buddy.
|
Wow - great pictures! I also love that mousetrap - and the disgusting thing - does it make it pick its nose? :)
|
Thanks for the great pics Rand.. looks like real fun and art :)
|
The amount of effort that went into the construction of some of that art must have been intense.
Do they assemble everything there? If so, do they arrive early to start building it, or do you get to watch it progress? |

Yes! "The Disgusting Spectacle" required human interaction to work. People would get into that giant hampster wheel to the left and create the power which lifted the hand up into the nostril, which gave a quarter twist to really dig in good, and pull out a green goo from the nose. :1orglaugh I saw it working one night and then I think it broke down. I know previous to the event they were blogging about how dificult it was to make it work properly. |
we demand pics of you RAND!!!

Most of the art is obvioulsy pre-fabricated and some of it takes a year or more to create. Some of the larger installations find permenant homes (as did the Temple of Gravity from 2003 which now resides on private land near Palm Springs). However, if you are there for the entire week (the only way to do BM imo) then you do get to see a lot of the art being assembled, placed, built, and some of it eventually destroyed either intentionally or by exposure to the elements. |
Wow. All the time people have to spare to make all that stuff. Awesome!
I need to go one year for sure. Oy.. |
I definatly need to go next year, I had no idea I was missing out on all that art, Mouse Trap was awesome. Thanks for the great pics man!
|
Awesome pictures. It amazes me what people can imagine and then create.

This was a great place to hang out at night. It was 20 degrees warmer inside this circle and many would pass through here each night. http://randomania.net/BM05/DSC07096.JPG http://randomania.net/BM05/DSC07127.JPG |

http://randomania.net/BM05/DSC07137.JPG http://randomania.net/BM05/DSC07140.JPG This doesn't look like much by day... but "Thunderdome" was *the place* to watch people battle it out. This was serious stuff. People get their hurt on here. http://randomania.net/BM05/DSC07141.JPG |
Those are badass pics bro nice work

Thunderdoooome! 2 Man Enter, 1 Man Leave! 2 Man Enter, 1 Man Leave!

One of the more notable challenges of the interactive art this year was a simple idea. A giant ladder. Reaching 108 feet staright up. I really wanted to climb this thing becuase I'm not at all fond of heights. My heart was racing just thinking about it and it is again as I type this. It was all very stable *except* for the last 10 feet or so where the ladder would *sway*. The psychology behind this "go all the way or don't do it all" intrigued me. You really don't get an accurate feel for how tall this thing was by looking at these pictures. And again, this is one of those pieces where you say to yourself "How the hell did they get this thing out here?" Side note: The back of your ticket to Burning Man states that you risk injury or death by attending/participating in this event". http://randomania.net/BM05/DSC07200.JPG http://randomania.net/BM05/DSC07202.JPG http://randomania.net/BM05/DSC07203.JPG |
Thanks for the awesome pics!
