How many have or will be moving to Costa Rica?

Seems to me that I've talked to quite a few people already who are either there or planning on being there soon.

Did I miss the memo? How did this come to be that so many are going there?

I plan on checking it out sometime next year. It's on the list of places I'd be interested in living at for awhile.

Big gringo community there. Lots of other countries to check out though... CR is not the only place.

Also... people are just now coming to terms that the USA is not the best place on earth anymore and can have a much better life elsewhere.

American's are afforded no special protection in Costa Rica.

After a short civil war, the Costa Rican army was disbanded. To ensure the country would not be over thrown by neighboring country's millitaries, defense pacts were signed with the United States of America. This means if Panama rolls in with an army, well, "here come da Marines".

What, you ask, did America get in return? The Costa Rican goverment will cooperate with the DEA, FBI, DOJ, CIA, Treasury, etc. Basically, if you're American and want to escape American laws, don't come to Costa Rica.

Just like happened with online sportsbooks, casinos and poker companies. Costa Rica is the way, no taxes to pay, layback lifestyle, whores, legal prostitution, great and cheap beer and more...

Stop talking out of your ass. Our friend's sportsbook-owning boss was handcuffed and taken away by the FBI who walked right into the office to arrest him.

Well I guess you know best. The poor fellow I know who was lead off by the FBI probably wishes you could call the State Department and clear this up for him.

Are their American's running Casinos and Sportsbooks here? Absolutely. Are they entirely safe? No fucking way.

Wow you're brilliant.

I know guys that sell drugs in the United States. I guess it's legal, if they're doing it.

I have nothing against you Warchild you are a cool guy. My response was not for you. I'm not saying is a legal thing to do under the eyes of the US gov, but Sportsbooks and Casinos are not illegal in CR, the Industry has been functioning in CR for more than 10 years and it keeps growing.

I understand what you're saying.

All we're trying to say is that it happens, but so do extradicions from Costa Rica to the United States. America and Costa Rica enjoy special treat considerations that Costa Rica does not have with other countries.

I very much doubt there's many, or any American Citizens openly running casinos and sportsbooks here in Costa all the while thumbing their noses at the US Goverment. It's done discreetly and through layers of corporations and off shore accounts.

God, no.

Like any poor country, there are dangerous areas. You have to use common sense and not go to some places at night, and not go to other places at all. For the most part, you'll have no business there anyway.

Armed guards are present in all banks, electronic stores, and well basically anywhere that stocks inventory of any value.

Car jackings and home invasions/robberies are the most common crimes you'd have to worry about.

All houses have bars and gates over windows and doors. Generally they're surrounded by large fences with razor wire. More security, less crime.

I've lived here a total of 14 months or so (not all in this stretch) and never been robbed or gotten myself in to any situation I was worried about being robbed or hurt in.

That is true my friend. What I was trying to say is that it should not be a problem for this industrry to move to CR if the gambling industry was able to make biz down there...

Exactly. The large(r) sites and companies would have no problems at all. It'd be much more difficult though, for instance, for US Affiliates and smaller (<$100,000 per year) companies to do it though. Not impossible mind you, but more difficult.

Primarily for taxes and the Weather. Secondarily because I like to experience new cultures, learn new languages and travel.

I lived down there for about, oh, 9 months or so?

I loved it, nice weather, cool bugs, great parties. Life's a big adventure there. I dated a nice tica university girl whom I inflicted "white guy fever" on.

Can't miss the traffic though. Or the pollution. Nothing like going downtown in rush hour and feeling like an invisible hand is choking you. The only brawl I got into in Costa happened to be with a group of Americans...

After a face full of pepper spray and being dragged out by security, this particular group was more interested in crying about it after the fact.

Been here for a few years now. It's an OK place, nada taxes on net revenue, nice climate and nobody bothers your ass!

For webmasters and anyone who is mobile, there are probably areas to suit everyone from beaches to rainforest.

Some shit is corrupt - what isn't? :-) I just can't be bothered with that bullshit and pisses me off. But, truth be known, it is probably no more corrupt than other places.

The country as a whole is peaceful and stable - they don't have an army. The people are... my opinion only, - laid back and friendly and genuinely want to help if the need arises. I even had the law with their sleeves rolled up in the car engine helping - not a common sight in the "civilized world".

So far, I've never come near any crime problems.

Way, way, way more.

For example. I can rent uniformed police officers (Fuerza) for 3000 colones per hour.

Yea.. that's the kinda shit ya get here!!

I was just thinking of scale... example - ya got Figueres (ex President) wandering around the world giving speeches and bullshitting while everyone knows he ripped the place off and still there is a reluctance to find a prosecutor ready to sign a warrant for his arrest.

But.. gotta say, they have had good Presidents as well who have done a lot to help with shit, not just within Costa Rica... Oscar! Chances are he may be back to power shortly.

Paperboy... the gambling industry here is not without its problems. Forgetting the fact the some casino ops are controlled by US folks who obviously are gonna end up in a jail cell back home - if they do go back. (A Learjet collects US citizens every Thursday from the airport to stand trial back home.)

The problem with any "industry" moving anyplace, is the government will step in and want a cut (or to put it another way, licence it). In the interim period there will be no end of hassle.

There has been a lot of thinking on the gaming industry - many have moved off already to the EU where there is less problems and those left here are the subject of discussion in govt.

The adult biz has little to offer Costa Rica - only more bad PR :-) Tho we don't want to associate the two, the country has went thru a patch of pedo-tourism and stamped down on it with a promise of 16 years in a jail cell. "Porn", tho not the same, will have the "aura" attached and doubt this would be welcome. It only takes one idiot to cause complete havoc!

As long as their laws are complied with, they don't give a shit. But having an "industry" here is another story.

A few folks shoot here with nada problems tony!

Law enforcement as also aware and just laugh. But.. the problem is it ain't down to some cop - it's the govt that matter and frankly, there ain't no clues as to what they *may* do or not do.

The only obvious criteria at the moment is no pedo stuff, but the moment there is some "scandal", hell.. they will be clamping down to show they are "doing something"

PS... Basically Costa Rica is a place to live - a playground. It's not a place for corps or doing business locally. All the corp stuff is for other offshore areas where you can pull funding in and pay nada taxes.
