Price Gouging
It seems that some people are greedy bastards and will take any opportunity to get people where it hurts when they are already down. I remember a few years back there was big talk of price gouging before a hurricane would roll in. Local hardware stores would double or triple the price of plywood because they could.
Well good thing they did that because it made it that much easier for Home Depot and Lowes to roll in and take their share of the market. I'd buy Home Depot stock because they wouldn't gouge a customer in a time of need. They don't need to. Just on that they deserve a thumbs up. I'm sure that in Louisiana there were a lot of merchants cashing in on this hurricane at the expense of their customers. |

Sleazy's post earlier about giving that lady $40 for a taxi ride made me think that perhaps people do need a bit of recognition for doing the right thing when the opportunity to not do the right thing is so strong.
Home Depot and Lowe's had an opportunity to sell $500 generators for $2000 and sheets of plywood for $100 each but they take the high road because it's good for their image and the community they serve. A lot of people said that Wal-Marts, Home Depots and Lowe's stores would infiltrate a community knock out all competition and become a monopoly. People still have other options but they go to the big guys for price and selection. Anyway, it's a good day to give a thumbs up to people that are doing the right thing, there doesn't seem to be enough of that going around. |

You think they Home Depot or Lowes are keeping prices the same out of the kindness of their heart? lol. They would be crucified by the public if they did that and probably boycotted by alot of people. Corporations always have an agenda and it's called money. |

Perhaps I'm not so cynical. Yes, they have an image to uphold, but remember shareholders would benefit if profits would rise, however the net effect of increased profits at the cost of ruining public image would probably be irreparable.
No matter what the reason, they are doing the right thing. You know what if they really wanted to gouge they could, and you know what they may pay a fine or some reparation and still be better in the long run. Remember they are a monopoly in many areas, people wouldn't have a choice. You have to give them credit for social responsiblity. No one says that they have to be socially responsible. |
