New Orleans is in direct path. Lets hope she survives.

A direct hit is a potential disaster that the city can't handle. I grew up in Louisiana, I recall all the "close call." However, it is no secret that a direct hit by a storm that dumps a load of continuous rains will create a major disaster in this country.

I love New Orleans, lots of great memories in one of the world's great cities.

I hope this one misses, but things look bad.

Yeah new orleans definitely wont be able to handle this hit, especially since it's so far below sea level.

I'm not too far away.. about 45 minutes west of NO.. I hope I don't lose internet access

Nope, I'm staying right here. A little rain and highly damaging winds wont hurt, right?

You guys should avoid the interstates, if anyone is around this area... I-10 west bound is nothing but bumper to bumper traffic, and I-10 east bound is nothing but trucks from energy companies from all over the state, and national guard/other misc. army guys.

I was supposed to visit in nola this weekend, but the storm delayed out plans. I've got my fingers crossed for our NOLa friends.

If you are there or near, I think that it is time to lock up, and flee the area.

I remember when the last big one hit... it must have been in 85 or something... I was living in Metairie right by the levee. (big hill to keep water out). Lake Ponchatrain came right up over the levee and flooded our streets badly. They have since raised the levee another 20+ feet... so it should help alot. It's the big lake Ponchatrain just north of the city that will cause the biggest problem if there is a direct hit.

good luck my old friend.

it's not looking good for new orleans..
if the people that are paid big money to make predictions are correct, then we'll have 20,000+ dead and no electricity for months.. maybe even years..
supposedly, if the water dumped into our bowl is severe enough.. it will be 6-12 months before it is pumped out. (because of environmental reasons and not pumping capacity)

Thanks, girly.

We're about an hour northwest of New Orleans and we're not going anywhere. We suspect that a loss of power and some rain will be the worst of it in our area. I'm crossing my fingers for those in the New Orleans area though.

Last year when Hurricane Ivan was due to hit, I was extremely disappointed with the New Orleans Emergency Management System. There was a homeless man who roamed the streets near my former job who didn't have any place to go. After calling EMS and being routed and re-routed to different numbers and/or departments, I was eventually told that the local transit bus service would provide free transportation the following morning for those needing shelter. No one at EMS seemed to care that a homeless man had no where to go. Anyway, I gave the man the proper phone number and some money and urged him to get to shelter. *sigh*

Do you expect the city to take care of every deadbeat degenerate that comes along?? Why don't you move into our city so you can contribute to the property and sales tax base and then you'll earn a right to complain about our response systems.

You wonder why no one at EMS gave a shit?? Well EMS stands for Emergency Medical Services.. and since a homeless man is not a medical emergency.. no one gave a shit!

NOHD-EMS typically has 8-13 units covering the entire city. People that call in complaining of chest pains or shortness of breath get priority over "a homeless man with no place to go".

If you really want to give that homeless bum a $500 tax payer funded ride to a hospital in an ambulance, then tell him to lay on the ground and call 911 and say you see an unconscious nonresponsive man on the sidewalk!

Ok genius! (you should edit your post to reflect the correct spelling of that word)

If she wasn't talking about the ambulance service.. then who was she talking about??? Did she expect the politicians at the Emergency Preparedness Department to really give a shit?

Do you work in or run some part of new orleans' emergency response systems?

When she saw her homeless man there were two numbers she could call.. one a 565-xxxx .. and that number will get nothing done.. typical government slackers.. the other was 911.. which would activate EMS, Fire, or Police.. and I already described the EMS situation for you.

They will run some RTA buses and church vans to take special needs persons to safe areas of refuge. If you can find that number, maybe you can put your name on a list. That number will not be in the phone book under EMS no matter what you think the letters stand for!

I didn't call the EMS you refer to. I used the acronym improperly. However, I did call the local city hall and police department (not 911) and was bounced around to so many different numbers until I managed to find the right place. I was disappointed in the fact that no one at any of the numbers I called seemed to care that someone didn't have proper shelter during a hurricane.

I would have never called Emergency Medical Services to inquire about shelter for a homeless man. I highly respect what you do and know that some people abuse your services. I am not one of them.

Mrs Lenny2..

Why are you thanking that guy for calling me an idiot? You either misnamed or called the wrong agency to deal with your homeless guy problem. If you called any phone number starting with 565 then you wasted your time!!

Actually earlier in the post she said "Emergency Management System" and then later in the post she abbreviated it EMS. She wasn't referring to medical services. (And she was thanking the guy for correcting you by saying "emergency management system", not thanking him for calling you an idiot)

Now untwist your panties and come ride the storm out over here, we'll have a Michael Moore movie marathon on my new 62" TV

I wasn't thanking him for calling you an idiot. I was thanking him for pointing out that I didn't call Emergency Medical Services. As I posted above, I improperly used the EMS acronym.

Like I said, regulated. You think you're the first jackass to thing of charging less for the product and tack it all on delivery? Southeast been getting hurricanes for a little bit longer than you've been around.

Cat 4 now, almost a cat5 winds 145mph gust to 175mph

If it hits the city the levees will break, the city will be flooded and thoudsands will die. (if it is a direct hit, as it is currently forecasted).

It will take month(s) to pump all the water out, and litterly millions will be homeless, everyone who evacuated will have no place to return to. Electricty in the surronding areas (my area) will be out for weeks.

This is very bad, if it holds this track with this intensity this wont be as bad as the tsunami, but will be right up there in world wide natural disasters.

um.......if this is as potentially calamitous as it appears to be why the hell isn't the military in there evacuating every last citizen by plane, train or whatever else moves people?

because of the hundreds of thousands off other locals trying to get out, only a couple ways in and out. interstates are backed up.

also, kinda hard to move 100K people but I believe we have a couple hundred public transportation buses they will load up with people tomorrow, that will get about 10K people out i would guess. the trains can take some out too.

Problem is people are stupid and most who are there DONT want to leave.

The 100K people without transportation is bullshit. I dont know where the media got that from. Unless if they are counting children, which is pointless because their parents have cars. there are about 500K people in the city, i would bet there is less then a couple thousand families with out transportation. And i am sure they have friends or other family members who can give them a ride. People can get out if they want to, they just don't want to.

there's an airport or two in NO - and military planes and commercial planes that could be used in a disaster - drag people onto buses to the airport onto planes and take them to a military base someplace. it's doable - IF this turned into hundreds of dead people you will hear that not enough was done. if there is a good chance hundreds if not thousands of people could die then it's up to the government to step in - they put people in mental hospitals against their will when they are a danger to themselves and somebody who refuses to evacuate a city that could be under 20 feet of water is mentally incompetent and should be dragged out of the city for his own safety.

it's nice in theory but not practical to get 100K's of people rounded up in 24 hours or less. First off how do you know which houses the people are hidding in from you or which ones are empty because they already left town. Do you kick in every door and search everyone;s home?

it's not possible. if people dont want to leave you can't make them. sure the same people will complain afterwards that they wanted to leave, lol it's typical they dont want to admit they choose to go through that shit.

Just an update - winds are 160 mph and the pressure has dropped below that of Andrew and Camille - which makes this an extremely deadly storm - this is the storm size that they used to predict the failure of New Orleans pumping systems - so if it is a direct hit expect more than thousands dead

If anyone needs a place to evacuate to I'm also northwest of the city by a little over 100 miles and the western side of the storm should be calmer - icq 127 670 340
but its probably gonna be hard to get out today if you havent already left
I-55 is all northbound now and getting packed - no southbound lanes available up to exit 30 or so in Miss.
