Seems like the Israelis are visiting upon that people the same indignity they undured. I'm sure there may be a little more to it than that but I suppose I don't feel too sorry for settlers that are losing their homes as a result of a 35 year illegal occupation.

The sad thing is that I found out why they were fighting in the Middle East from reading debates from GFY.

For around 24 years I had no clue why they were fighting, I always see stuff on the news about people shooting and stuff but I never really knew why or anything, it's not like it's something that was taught in school. Plus I'm not the type of person really into politics or current events so I had no clue until I read this board... lol

It's about some people fighting for land beause some was given to Jews after WW2. That's all I know... lol

Well - just to clear up one misconception

The Israeli state in Palestine was actually "created" in 1922 by the League of Nations - after WW2 the state declared their independence which led to an invasion by Egypt, Jordan, Syria, Lebanon and Iraq the next day. Israel was sucessful at defending their state for 15 months - then the UN stepped in and was able to come up with armistice agreements with all of the countries except Iraq which refused to negotiate with Israel. This divided up all of the land into different regions - with Israel getting a small piece - and they opened their country to all Jews to immigration.
There have been continuous wars ever since between Arabs and Israelis - and tons of different peace negotiations that the US has tried to get in the middle of.
The details and day to day history make for good reading - or if you are as old as I am - old memories

WTF does this have to do with the fighting in Gaza now? Israeli soldiers fighting with Israeli settlers who were given the land by the Israeli government?

israel was formed in 48', then in 67' there was another war and we conquered lands, those lands were never really under israeli official territory, there was the military law running palestinians lives.
the settlers are those who live in those conquered lands which no country in the world recognizes israel's sovernty over there.

at the end of the day, full agreement and peace will come only when all those 200,000 settlers will be forced out back to the old borders and in this territory the new palestinian state will be formed.

most palestinians accept it, the world accepts it, about 40-50% of israelis accept it, the current palstinian leadership accepts and, and i believe them.
but sharon takes his time... he believes in midway solutions and he got bushh's back so far.

so nothing exciting really happened. 8000 of those 200,000 settlers were forced out. nothing is really solved yet.

i belive the peoples will force the leaders to accept the agreement. my guess - peace in 3-6 years.

my iPod engraving says - peace in the middle east by 2010. but i'm not a common israeli so who knows.
it's more up to bush than it's up to us... like everywhere in the world.

the basics are this:

the Isrealies and the Palastinian leaders have been going back and forth about peace for years. Just when they get close to an agreement something happens and it stalls. So the jewish leaders decided that the best way to move towards peace to to evacuate gaza and let the arabs have it. There are some hardline jews living in gaza who are now refusing to leave and the government is forcing them to against their will.

It would be like if your town decided to surrender one of it's neighborhoods to the neighboring town and you lived in that neighborhood. They are forcing you to leave ( the government will pay for your move and buy you a new house ) but you decide this is your home and you are not going so the police show up at your door step and take you out by force.

It's a bad move by the isrealie leadership because all they are doing is causing a rift among their own people and showing to the world that terrorism, if carried out long enough, can work.

Also it will settle nothing, this part of the world has known nothing but bloodshed since before recorded history, there is no reason to think it will stop now.

What exactly are you talking about?

This thread is about CURRENT violence in the Gaza strip. It's not about 1900 years ago, the 1917+ WIKI version of the conflict, or the last "peace accord".

Just to confuse the "orthodoxy" issue further, some orthodox jews (I suppose you could call them ultra-orthodox for convenience) do not believe the modern state of Israel should exist at all. According to their interpretation of the Torah (most Jews accept the same interpretation, but ignore it for pragmatic reasons) Israel should not rise again until the coming of the Messiah.

BTW although the majority of settlers in the West Bank and Gaza are religious Jews, not all are. And after the large payouts to the settlers who had to evacuate the Sinai in 1982, some cynics suggested a few settlers might even be motivated by the expectation of similar rewards.
