Just to confuse the "orthodoxy" issue further, some orthodox jews (I suppose you could call them ultra-orthodox for convenience) do not believe the modern state of Israel should exist at all. According to their interpretation of the Torah (most Jews accept the same interpretation, but ignore it for pragmatic reasons) Israel should not rise again until the coming of the Messiah.
BTW although the majority of settlers in the West Bank and Gaza are religious Jews, not all are. And after the large payouts to the settlers who had to evacuate the Sinai in 1982, some cynics suggested a few settlers might even be motivated by the expectation of similar rewards.
