How much do you think doctors make in Canada?

I hear numbers from 60k to like 150k
What do you think is the average salary for a doctor?
Also, anyone have a list of professions and the average salary associated with them?

So they go to school for what, 8 years with continuous training, for $60-100k yearly? That isn't exactly bad, but you can make that money with much less time and money investment in other careers.

Much higher. Upwards of 300k from the last time I checked. And that's only from a General Practioner and she's only working 4 days a week now and no emergency room. Work the ER and 5 days a week and you could probably hit the 400k barrier. Become a specialist and even higher.

Average take home for a family doctor in Canada is around $99,000. Sly you have to remember though, in Canada their education is highly subsidized, it only costs around 100k for the 8 years of med school. Still an insane time commitment for the potential return. Not much worse than a teacher though, they go to school for 4 years and earn 40k a year and have to deal with our screaming brats all day.

I also forgot to mention that number is gross, not net. Gotta remove insurance, office and medical usage fees, etc. etc. The person I know pays almost 20-25% of that to the clinic she works at before taxes. After taxes she ends up with less than half.

Hey don't let FunForOne see that....he thinks if we adopt universal coverage in the U.S. like the Canadians have that doctors will only earn minimum wage.

It is really high, I should have mentioned in my original post that amount was before all the fees and insurance. Once you factor this out, it cuts your salary by a large chunk. Then again, the doctor I know has nearly 20 years experience and not a single malpractice.

What about having a fulfulling career where you feel like you're helping people and making a difference? Now if you go to train to be a middle manager at a faceless corporation for 60-100k then it would be different.

That sounds lovely, but how realistic is it? Most teachers I know complain about the pay and benefits. Same with most other "charitable" occupations. It always boils down to money. Yes, there are some people that do their jobs truly to help others, and hats off to them, but that isn't the majority or even the norm.

We are planning on opening a clinic here in Mexico for my wifes mom. She is a doctor from cuba, and once she gets here we want to open it. It is on average 30$ US to see the doctor. Most doctors here average about 10 people a day. The exchange rate is 10.5 to 1.

Not a bad living.

WG You are way too high, Today due to gov regulations they make much less than that. The family doctor I go to makes 17.23 per visit from the government. He can do maybee 4-5 visits an hour, from this he has to pay the secretary and office expenses. Its Not really worth being a doctor today for that kind of aggrevation and salary caps. The guys making big money are the ones with Hospital priviledges and specialists and those guys put in long and hard hours.

Certain doctors are salary capped but it still is possible to hit 300+. I know because I did the medical invoicing for her for a while

I know a doctor that went to Canada from South Africa and he makes 300K+, but as you said it's gross, so no idea what he clears, he's also a specialist which prob makes a huge difference, and works in some God forsaken place, which prob makes a diff too ;)

Hell, they make $60K at the local Ford plant, just doing one repetitive task all day long. I know Canadian doctors make much more than that. If they don't, they need to do what the CAW does...go on strike! LOL

Oh ok ... private clinics . Yea they can make very good money ... I'm talking about hospital doctors...

One of my father friend's is a neurologist and works with drugs addicts in prison trying to help them and evaluate the long term effects of certain drugs . I've heard some funny stories ;)

Actually you can probably buy more with 300k CND in canada then 300k US in the US ... especially if you look at housing costs ;)

Here's google's answer:

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&l...ctor+make %3F

How much money you make as a 'full fledged' doctor will depend on many, many factors: What type of medicine you practice, what part of the country you live in, how you are paid (e.g. flat salary or per/patient seen), how many hours you work etc. Regardless of these factors physicians generally make a sufficient income to live comfortably.

What about the "in canada" factor you forgot about ?

I can see the GP I have been to bills about 110K and the Eye specialist about 300K. Looking at the listings it seems the average is under $200k for most. And that's CDN dollars before costs and taxes. Not a lot.

I think the huge salary is enough for the big risks that involve being a doctor. Imagine if you make a small error, you can get someone killed or worse, infect yourself with any disease.

you people in Canada should pay more in taxes for your free health care.
then the doctors can make more.
it is only fair.

My Dad left Canada to start a walk-in clinic in the US. Over 10 years he had 50% of his income reduced due to government legistlation... He was a doctor in Ontario for over 25 years and after a bad divorce said screw this I'm moving to the states where I am appreciated and paid well.

He had been exceptionally successful with his new clinic but still works 6 days a week, 10-12 hours a day... At his age I think that is nuts, he should be in retirement mode or semi-retirement mode...

There is no way I will be killing myself working at his age, I want to be retired and enjoying my family and lifestle. Life is too short

lol. Doctors from 3rd world countries often take another nursing course just to work as nurses on Canada or US where better compensation is promised.

who cares what canadian doctors make. truth is, when canadians get really sick, they allways find their way of getting treatment here in the states somehow.

Also, anyone have a list of professions and the average salary associated with them?
So, they make less than me?
