My dog died right around 2 months ago now...& i've missed her everyday since. I'm contemplating getting another puppy from the SPCA, but i just don't know if i could take the heart break of losing another best friend.

What are your experiences with this?

A cat I owned for years had to be put down for cancer. I was a mess... they become part of your family... like a child. I held her as they gave her the shot to put her down. I couldn't stand not having her around... to the point where I threw out her litter box, food dish, etc. Then I decided to pick up another cat to fill the void. You get use to having an animal around and it's weird without it.

I would suggest to pick up another dog to love... you will always have the memory of the one you lost. But the new dog will be happy to have an owner that cares so much

Bred dogs will live happy lives no matter what. Dog's at the pound get euthanised if they can't find a home. Save ones life.

Our friend lost his dog a couple months ago and it just so happens that another friend of ours had a litter the same day. So we got a puppy and do did our friend and I think it is helping him cope.

I know the feeling, i had my last dog since i was 8...shit she was around for the reagan administration, she lived a long happy life. I just don't know if i can deal with it again. It was like losing a child or a family member. I had her for 18 years.

I just own like 5-7 cats(or dogs, in your case) at any given time.. this way you dont really get TOO attatched to one single animal

My dog Sully is over 15 now, and although he's still in pretty good shape I know that my time to face what you've gone through recently isn't too far off. I'm not looking forward to it.

I think that if you are open to having another dog then go for it. There is a hole left there when your dog dies, but a new puppy can help fill that hole, at least a little. You've obviously got some love to give to a dog, no sense letting it go to waste.

I know what you are going through right now..

My cat died a month ago. She was 15. It's pretty hard, especially at night. She slept with us every night. I have 2 kids, but the house is somewhat empty. I miss her so much

I'm not ready for another cat. Not yet. Maybe in the future.

The last couple of months I was saying the same thing.. Then my cat died a month ago. Weird, but preparing to face the facts is helping mewith the grieving process. But it's still extremely hard.

I hope you do regular check up with your vet. I didn't do that and didn't know my cat was having a renal failure.. I could've saved her and give her a few more years..

I'm still not over it and have moments when I get all teary eyed thinking about him. Feels like losing a child to me. He'd always lay right near me while I was working.

I don't think you really can get over it. The saddest part about dogs and cats is they only last about 10 years on average. That's really not much time when you think about it.

I've been looking around, but don't think the time is right for me yet.

Some breeds of dogs seem to last longer than others. My first dog was a Lab-shepard cross (Samoyd-Siberian-Lab-Shepard actually) (sp?)... he lived only to a little past 10 years.

My current dog is a collie-husky cross, and he's 15 and a half years old and still quite puppyish and frisky much of the time. He sleeps much more these days than he used to, but I'm fairly confident that he has at least a year or two left in him before he's too far gone to keep him alive.

My sister just put their dog (a 17 and a half year old springer spaniel) to sleep this past week. He was deaf, blind, and his hind legs finally gave out all together. I don't think I would hang on and keep a dog alive as long as they did with him, he was too far gone even last year. But it's hard to let go, and yes they do become just like a child to some owners.

I say get a new puppy. It won't replace your old dog, but it will put a salve on some of the hurt and will create an improved life for one more dog who is otherwise sitting in a cage at the Humane Society (or whatever you call your local abandoned pet facility)

My childhood dog is still alive. I got him when I was 10 years old for my birthday. He is 14 years old now.. He's still in pretty good health except for his hearing. I don't even like to think about having to put him down. I know when they get old and are in pain, it's the best for them. But shit, they become just like family..

.last monday my dachshund dog died too. really a lost in the family. she was not just a friend but a part of the family. dogs bring joy to us really.

it's always heartbreaking to lose a pet. i also think twiced in getting another one when i lost my pet dog last year.. but i still decided to have one. and he's been an equally good pet to me. equally lovable.

If you're considering getting a new puppy, you're ready. There are a lot of dogs out there that have been cast by the wayside because of fuckheads like "master at work" and they deserve the love and attention you could give them... they've had a hard life.

Don't rule out older dogs, either. Nothing like having an older dog come into your home and show you every minute of the day how thankful he/she is to have that second chance. They know what's up at the shelter and what's going to happen. You can see it in their eyes.

I've got a cat that's 15 now and I can't bear the thought of losing him. He's still in great shape, thank god. That cat's been with me through an abusive husband, a divorce, another marriage, and patiently (sometimes not so patiently, lol) watched me add three rambunctious boys to the family. Don't know what I'm going to do without him when he finally decides it's time to go.

Our family once own a puppy before who died before reaching 5 months. He started to weaken when he had a flu. He then recovered after given medication by a vet, but weeks later we just found him lying dead at our sofa.
