I've known a few people like that. One was a guy named Jeff H. in FX. He was the kinda guy that you'd have to say hi to in the morning no matter how much you fuckin' hated him just because it was easier to say "hi" than to have to put up with his bullshit all day.

"Hey you didn't say hi to me this morning. What's up with that? Do you have something you wanna say to me? I thought we were friends. this is not how you treat a friend..."

Fuck man, that dude could go on for fuckin' DAYS like that. And the fucked up part was, in FX we all seemed to get along so well, and no one ever wanted to piss anyone else off beause we all got each other jobs when one show had ended.

But yeah, I know what you mean.

some people you meet at shows you just say hi, shake their hand smile but in the back of your head you really hate them.

i guess it comes down to uptake/output rate compatibility -- it's certainly possible to enjoy something, but only up to a maximum dosage -- people are the same way | where does the notion come from that to like someone requires that you are always in the mood for them -- marriage wouldn't even shoot that high --

I have an old friend that I grew up with in Brooklyn that I feel that way about. Different scenario because we've known each other for 25 years though.

Still have love for the dude, but we have nothing in common anymore. He's a grown man now - that still lives with his parents in the projects we grew up in ... when he isn't doing 6, 9, and 18 month bids in Rikers Island for stupid shit!

And when I do see him, it's like old times for the first couple hours reminicing about the same fun shit we ALWAYS do ... then get caught up on recent events - then we have nothing to talk about!

The japanese call it "not disturbing the wa of the workplace". Basically, everyone understands tacitly that if you and someone else have problems, confronting that person could lead to a breakdown of the entire spirit (wa) of the group.

Dealing with people on a professional basis you don't really like requires you to sort of 'wear a mask', where the things other people do or say have no real effect and emotions take second place to pragmatic realities of business... like getting along in an office with a person you actually detest.

So yeah, not only is it common, it's damn near universal.

i think we all have people like that in our lives - i know i do, i have a low threshold. worst was in high school, i had a guy for 2 years wanted to be my best friend, became like a stalker, showed up at my house all the time, hunted me down at school - he was a nice guy, not a loser, but i had no interest in him being a part of my life other than somebody i said 'hi' too. i never had the heart to tell him to go away. only way i really got rid of him for good was going away to college.

um.........worse, what if a person like this is in your family. i have that - i love my sister but a phone conversation with her is painful, she goes on and on and on and i'm just not interested in 90% of what she's saying - and again i don't have the heart to tell her so i'm stuck in 15 minute conversations listening to the minutiae of her day. i do sometimes fake emergencies or calls on the other line that have to be taken but then i feel real guilty so i don't do it much.

smart people pick up on the fact that you're not into them thankfully.

Yep. Same here. I have a friend from high school who I've known a good 20 years, however, we have nothing in common anymore. We haven't for a long time. When I hear from him via phone, or e-mail, he is always talking about some old school shit from 2 decades ago. "Yeah, you remember (some random girl) from back in da dayz? Damn man, I'd like to fuck her now, blah blah blah". Or some other random act of remote humor from back then, beating up someone, some event, some story, etc.

Everytime I hear from him, it's like climbing in the Delorian, and taking a trip back. The worst part is he will ask me what happened to all these old people from my high school, or ask me to track them down. I honestly could give a fuck what happened to these people, nor would I track down some girl or person I barely remember for any reason.

He reminds me of someone who's either caught in a time warp, or the best years of his life were in high school which is just sad. So for the past 3-4 years I try and dodge his calls. I mean, at one point in time we were best friends, much like brothers, and so on, but I'm sorry if I got on with living my life, and realized high school was over 2 decades ago.
