It was 1984.
Here's the classic commercial (video):
http://www.ifilm.com/ifilmdetail/2423864?htv=12
Her name was Clara Peller, she was a newbie to the biz
She had a funny part later in the movie "Moving Violations" with Bill Murray's younger brother John.

TVLAND plays it all the time, it's still good for a laugh over a beer and a joint

She was fired from the Wendy's ads after she did a spaghetti sauce commercial in which she exclaimed "I found it!" (in answer to the question "Where's the beef?"). http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0671050/bio

Moving Violations was in '85, she died in '87.

Holy 80s flashback, batman!

Gives me the urge to dust off Breakfast Club or Fast Times for a view, then crank some AC/DC.

Mmmm... Phoebe Cates....

There was a series of 'em. They all revolved around little old ladies (one in particular) getting a burger from Other Burger Joint Inc., looking at a rediculously small patty on the bun and saying "Hey, Wherrrrrrrrrrrrrre's the BEEF?"

It was to promote the fact that wendy's used square patties, so you could see the burger hanging out of the edge of the bun.

Yup, I miss those commercials. I may have to switch on tvland at some point just to wait for them.

I also loved how everything was so disproportional in those commercials. As in that image I posted... the phone is huge, the bun is massive and the patty, as you said, is rediculously small.

They really had a winner with those commercials. I like to think of it as a predecessor to "wasssup!!"

I remember being bummed when that old lady died. Those commericial were great for their time. Good fast food marketing when Wendy's was still a small brand. Can anyone recall a Wendy's commercial before that? I can't.

Were the commercials about their burgers being juicy and messy before or after that? I remember one with a nun at the end who wipes her mouth with a napkin and looks up as if he might have seen her.

I'm pretty sure Dave Thomas didn't start appearing in the commercials himself until after the "Where's the beef" series.
