so i just bought this maxtor external hard drive...

and im duplicating all the files from my old laptop to this hard drive and when i get my new laptop i want to transfer these files over to it.

from what i understand, i need to reformat the new laptop drive to ntfs file system, then install the OS then 'restore' my files to the new laptop from the external HD? I have never done this before...

whats the best way to get all my shit from old latop to the new laptop settings and all

go get a program called norton ghost (or any disk imaging program) and you can mirror your whole original hard drive and burn it to a few cd's / a dvd .. this is the easiest way

wait no.. using disk imaging software will take a 'picture' of your original hard drive, all files, all settings, everything, after you burn this disk image and you decompress everything onto your new laptop .. your external hard drive doesnt need to be used if you're just trying to make your new laptop mimic your old one

first of all, if everythign is right then your new labtop will be ready to go and you don't need to install shit. and the hard drive doesn't has t be formated. The only reason your external has to be in nts is because it is a slave and a local disk. So far as i know you can just copy back all the files to your new labtop. There is not much to restore and sure not if you try to copy files that my cot from windows folder that was used by other programs on your old labtop to run. They won't work on your new one. So just install the programs again. Or the prgram must have a restore option.

But basicly this extrenal hard disk is nohing els then a bog cd so just copy everything back to your new pc.

another option: get a $10 RJ45 crossover cable, plug it into both of your laptop's NIC cards/plugs and just drag and drop everything over your new LAN

you can mirror/image, or simply just get the new laptop, install the OS, plug in the external drive and it should show up in "My Computer" then just copy the files to where you want them.

all i want to save are my emails, pictures, favorites, passwords and few other things.. not a major deal really.. i thought the external drive would be usefull for other things down the road for other things.. but i can just cut and paste the files i save onto this external drive then right?

you even can't do that it won't work. to many files at so many different plces have to work together. you will keep having errors. Plus why would you. just make sure you always have a backup of the programs you use and the files on your extranal hard disk. When ever you need it you install it again to your new pc or labtop. Really nice when you get a virus on your pc

ok for that you can just cut and past. but watch out with your emails because you can't just cut and past them with most email programs. they give you the option in the program to make a backup. then when you need it you can restore that backup again.

get a copy of vmware, install an os in it and setup a share and xfer all the files you need. much easier to backup everything when its all contained in 1 working file.

don't sell the laptop with a old drive in it.. someone can recover the data no matter how much you format it.. unless you take the time to use Evidence Eliminator.

lemme help you out here... backup your outlook express files (instructions here).... u can import them later. copy all your other important files (photos, documents, bookmarks, etc) to the hard drive as well as the folder you've saved all your email backup files. hook up your ext HD to your new laptop & spend the next few hours putting it all onto the new system. its really not that difficult, just time-consuming.

this has been an "assist" from the Persignup.com Crew. thanks for your attention.
