Instruments transmitted data to Earth about Laika's pulse, respiration, blood pressure and heartbeat for seven days until she died when her oxygen supply ran out. The spacecraft was not designed to be recovered and it burnt up as it re- entered the atmosphere on 14 April 1958, 162 days after its launch.

Suborital: in the 50's, Albina and Tsyganka traveled upward to the edge of Earth's atmosphere at an altitude of 53 miles, before the were ejected (yes, they survived).
