Why do you have your icq show as "available" when you are not "available?"

If you see me "available," rest assured, I am available.

And yes, I am actually online that much.

I just don't get it. I have icq'd 5 people this morning that leave themselves set at "available" all the time.

I believe that 80% of you do this.

I do the opposite - I'm always showing unavailable when 85% of the time I'm available Everyone I deal with knows that though - keeps the riff raff out ;)

Why do a lot of people who should be available always have themselves set at Non-Available?

I know many sales reps do this 365.

I hate people that set to invisible. I have to go into my prefs and change to "show offline contacts" and then sift through them all.

And then, it is back to square one. You may or may not be there. You might as well show as "available" all the time.

I don't get it. But I am not that smart so it is par for the course haha

I agree with you.

I use AIM a lot.

Hell man, if someone shows "available" on icq, I will see, pending I have the contact, if their AIM is online so I don't waste my time.

What I hate more than any of this is the "Hi are you there?" messages.

IT'S A TEXT CHAT MEDIUM PEOPLE!!!

Type what you need, then move on and I will answer when I am around.

But usually by the time I get back to them they are no longer around and I spend a day or two to find out what they wanted.

Haha...

I admit, I roam around a lot. So I may be walking around but if I show available, I am getting your message (pending there aren't tech issues with the connection).

I have been up and online since about 7am working on this promotion stuff. I am about to go swim some laps in the pool and take Chopper off. I will turn set myself to "away." haha

the riff raff might be looking to ask you questions about your program, but see that you arent online or there to help them and move right on to another program

its the best way. id rather be not available but help someone out, than available and not be around to help. so i set status to away most the time

I honestly did not understand what you meant. Honestly, I just don't understand why you would not just be available when you are available.

Hell, if riff raff hits me up, which is rare, I just don't reply.

Nope, the riff raff are those who aren't in the biz wanting cyber sex I get tons of new "adds" a day that I hop on immediately (so to speak!) that are new business folks. Old business folks already know I'm really there - I've been using ICQ with this same ID for years - and if not, the message will pop up when I get back online

It's a timed setting though. In other words, when I get up and leave, after I no activity on my machine for x time, it goes to away or na...not sure which one.

Having a username of "brand0n" or "WEGCory" brings different folks to ICQ than having "Peaches"

It is nothing personal, everyone does their thing one way for a reason I suppose. I just don't see the logics involved.

But as I said, I am not a bright one apparently.

Hm... not here..

I know I have that setting on MSN, but I turned that off, because most of the people on msn are only bothering me while I'm working so I just don't answer, but as soon as I left for 5 minutes and came back afterwards, msn switched to away, and after that back to online as soon as I started using my computer again... people would know I was back and start talking to me again :P

It's also a possibility to set myself at 'away' all the time, but I don't like that :P

If I am away for 10 minutes, it says I am idle. 10 more minutes, I am away.

Adium.

The times tell me how long someone has been away. For example, when Chris goes to Vegas, it can read 3 days, 42 minutes.

haha

But it only works if people are on timed prefs. Chris and Poppy both are. They both use PCs.

i just stay in n/a mode all the time. why? because most of the time i am on the computer i am busy with one thing or another and i rather have ppl think i am just not there than ignoring them but i always respond to whoever messages me when i get a few minutes.

It's too complicated. I use ICQ and Yahoo regularly, and MSN every once in a while. I use at least 4 different computers and my phone, all running different OS's, at different locations. Sometimes I use the stock interface for each client, sometimes Trillian, sometimes GAIM. They all have different settings, different timers, different away messages, etc.

If I'm on, I'll respond. If I'm gone, I'll respond when I get back.

I remain invisible unless I have time to talk. Normally this applies when I am in the middle of 'business' and dealing with one person in particular, or grabbing offlines. If I do not have time to chat for more than a few minutes, I stay invisible. If I have time to shoot the breeze, then I will be otherwise.

I always leave my icq on invisible. I got in the hang of it a few years ago when my icq was going off left and right with spam (ifriends etc.. fake spam messages).

Plus it keeps people from icqing me just to chat about nothing when they're bored.

But I am online practically 24 hours a day regardless and usually very prompt at returning icq's/emails.

I constantly get messages from people when I'm set to away or not available... even when I'm offline.

Why?? Because people are used to everyone else being set to something other than "available."

I asked someone once, why message me if I'm "not available" and they said "because I am always set to not available when I'm online so I figured you would be there too"

Sorry, I actually use the icq away messages for what they're intended. If I'm not available, don't expect me to be available.

I forget because my computer is on all the time and I get busy, so I am someone who leaves my icq on available and I am really not, LOL.

I kinda look at it just like a voice mail message or even email. I don't expect people to be online at the same time as me. So I'll still just leave an icq message (saying whatever it is I needed) and figure they'll reply back whenever. Pretty much like an email but on icq.

I never really pay attention to whether someone is actually online or not, I just leave an icq message whenever.

But I never expect to get an instant response always figuring the person is away.

I will send people messages whether they are online, offline, away, N/A, I don't care. I agree it is a messaging center.

But take this for example. I go online and see that Poppy shows online and I need something, I know he is there If he shows offline and it is important, I may just call him instead.

As explained earlier, the riff raff doesn't come from the industry

Yes. Also if you get up and walk away from the computer for a while and forget to adjust your ICQ no one will get mad at you for being away since your ICQ already says you're away. :D

Mine is usually set to "Away" as well, but I'm here a lot of the time.

I'm always available - even when I put myself *off for the night* I'm normally here just that I'm not sitting in front of the computer every minute - I may be outside smoking or watching a show and will glance at the screen to see if anyone has written. I'll only take myself offline or put myself unavailable if I'm in an online meeting or if my computer is shutdown.

I'd hate to think I missed a message - *crazy, I know*

eros, I'm guilty of the 'are you there?' messages hehehe With about 48% of my list on *orphaned* a good part of my messages never make it through *and I have to know when they don't*

I hate it when someone messages me with "Are you there?"

Just say what it is you want. Say it. Spit it out, I'll get it when I get it and respond. Why do I have to be there for you to say what it is you want?

Or idiots who say "Hey" with their first message to you. Wtf is that?

"sup" <----- utterly retarded. (unless I previously contacted you, but then again if I did you would know "What's up")

"hi"...... uh yeah hi, tell me who you are and what you want already.

Yes, some things are better said when the person is on, but you can still tell them what the gist of it is instead of saying "you there?"

grrr

:D
