Finally Made The Move To A D-SLR (PIC - BOOBS)

We've been using the Sony P&S cameras (707/717/828) since we started NaughtyAllie but finally made the move to a D-SLR. A question for the photographers out there: Is this a good starting package for content? I guess I probably should have asked this question before getting it.

the 20d is an excellent choice - i just predict you will soon wish to have one lens that covers full body shots as well as closeups without running around or changing them.

Precisely why I should have asked this question before buying this stuff! So what what lens would be best suited for both close-ups and full body shots? And does it come in the "L" series?

My recommendation is to throw down for a fixed 50mm lens...

Like the 50mm 1.4 or 1.8

I use the 50mm 1.4D Nikkor for most of my shoots and its just a stunning lens... super sharp...

You've got a great setup with the L lenses... esp the 2.8 Zoom... thats just a dope a lens...

I would round it off with the 50mm...

If you'd like to see samples, just holler.

ha, if i only knew...

we work with the 24-70 from Canon as well, but for the pinkshots you always have to crawl towards the model.

we recently tested the last weeks a Sigma 18-200 - for the zoom it was excellent, exactly what we wanted. but a lot of pics were suddenly blurry and in the corners the pics were a bit distorted. overall the comfort was not worth the loss in quality. so we are looking for another one now...

I see. I sometimes get lazy at shows and try to leave my Canon USM 70 - 300 on, but man, it is tough to take closer photos with it. You have to step back a lot. The normal lens that Canon provided me with when I bought my EOS is damn good. I use it a lot.

There is nothing "normal" about the 50mm lens.

You can have all the zoom lenses you want, but the 50mm lens will consitently produce sharper images between F/5 and F/8 over the L lenses he has because its a prime lens. (plus it's a low light lens with the 1.4D, making it a lot faster than the wide angle and medium zoom he has) which would be good for hotel shoots.

His wide angle is a great lens.

If he was to get anything else, besides the 50mm, I would say the 70-200 2.8. But you tell me if he wants to throw down more than 1500 for the best tele zoom on the market?

Forgive me, as I am no expert, but isn't he already getting 50mm?

I have the Canon 70 - 300, USM, but it lacks the IS like the one you listed shows. To be honest, I am not paying that much for a lense right now. Do you have one? Do you think it is worth it?

I spent a lot of money on a Manfrotto tripod / head set up instead.

I hiked on the 4th of July with that lense, the normal lense, and the tripod. My back was really sore that night.

because you get the 50mm between the 24-70mm doesn't mean the aperature blades are gonna be the same when you shoot.

There is a reason why they make prime lenses instead of just having everything zoom, trust me... You'd love the 50mm. I can shoot day in day out and not change a thing...

I do not have the Canon lens I listed above because I'm a Nikon guy.

I will be purchasing a 70-200 2.8 ED VR IF-S Nikkor Zoom in the next 2 weeks though, everyone is out of stock.

I get it. So one example might be that you can get LESS depth of field?

You can have all the zoom lenses you want, but the 50mm lens will consitently produce sharper images between F/5 and F/8 over the L lenses he has because its a prime lens. (plus it's a low light lens with the 1.4D, making it a lot faster than the wide angle and medium zoom he has) which would be good for hotel shoots.

His wide angle is a great lens.

If he was to get anything else, besides the 50mm, I would say the 70-200 2.8. But you tell me if he wants to throw down more than 1500 for the best tele zoom on the market?

Shit it's only $200.00 more than the 24-70 I have but do you really use something like that to shoot content? Serious question, I'm new to all this lens shit that goes along with an actual D-SLR. That thing looks like something you'd use to shoot a sporting event, no?

In a way yes, by depth of field, meaning when your zoomed all the way at 300mm on your 70-300, then yes...

But you can create depth with the low 1.4 aperature...

It's all still stuff i'm learning as well.

Yea, this lens is built for sports, indoor/outdoor. You name it.

But if you got this lens, you'd never need another zoom lens again.

You can buy this lens today, and sell it two years from now (given a good condition) for almost the same amount. It doesn't lose that much value.

The lenses you have are great. I have them both and they are worth every penny. You may also want to look at the 35mm and 50mm primes...they are very sharp and dirt cheap. Also for any outdoor work the 70-200L is fantastic and the best headshot lens as well.

The Canon flashes are not so hot tho...They almost always expose too hot and look like a flash pic.

Seems like a great camera, I'm really looking forward to mastering it, which I'm sure will take quite some time!
