You can have all the zoom lenses you want, but the 50mm lens will consitently produce sharper images between F/5 and F/8 over the L lenses he has because its a prime lens. His wide angle is a great lens.
If he was to get anything else, besides the 50mm, I would say the 70-200 2.8. But you tell me if he wants to throw down more than 1500 for the best tele zoom on the market?

Forgive me, as I am no expert, but isn't he already getting 50mm?
I have the Canon 70 - 300, USM, but it lacks the IS like the one you listed shows. To be honest, I am not paying that much for a lense right now. Do you have one? Do you think it is worth it?
I spent a lot of money on a Manfrotto tripod / head set up instead.
