Lots of spammers out lately...

I spent at least an hour today sending abuse emails to affiliate programs, and filing FTC complaints against those that did nothing to stop the spamming affiliates on previous complaints.

If anyone gets a non can-spam 2003 compliant email, make sure to report it... Now that they've started to prosecute these idiots hopefully it will lighten up the load on our inboxes.

If you get spam, report it to the affiliate program first... many will terminate affiliates for TOS violations. If they don't, then report the spam to [email protected] (the FTC actually reviews these and will file criminal charges in applicable cases), their credit card processing companies, and as a last resort Visa USA (we don't need them comming down any harder on this industry, but this shit has to stop... spam gives all of us a bad name).

btw, here's a good info URL... explains what is illegal and what is not.

Spam filters catch all of the "legal" stuff.. so if you're using outlook and it makes it into your inbox, chances are it's breaking the can-spam act.

90% of my spam comes from the same guy... some dude in Costa Rica. He'll be loosing his cheques from a few affiliate programs, well worth the time in my opinion. And the affiliate programs that shelter this guy will have another complaint in the FTC stack. They'll add up over time and programs that support this crap will be shut down.

If nobody reports it, it won't stop...

These idiots need to find a legitimate way to make money in online adult, or find another business.

not all spammers are in the US, in my opinion the only ones worth reporting are the paypal/ebay/banking phish emails.

Yeah, those ones are annoying... but in most cases I think the phising emails are sent out and spread by worms. The ones that try to install spyware as soon as you load the message in outlook are a pain too, good thing antivirus companies are all up to date these days.

I report the ones that are promoting US affiliate programs too, the spammer might not be in the states, but affiliates promoting US programs still have to follow US laws. Unfortunately there are still a couple affiliate programs that allow spam, but it has to be can-spam compliant... and it never is because they try to sneak it through email filters.

let me tell you something

there is no way people can stop spam. there are simply too many people out there spamming hoping to make their money

say these people were to disappear, then you have the REAL spammers that have 100+ servers pumping out emails non-stop

so what if you shut down 1 of their campaigns, you don't think they will bother to open up another one?

there is only 1 way to stop spam, get the latest and greatest anti-spam software for your mailbox

Spamassassin 3.03 seems to be doing great, so instead of wasting hours of your time trying to change the world, install the software and use future hours of your time on something more productive

The funniest ones are when people think they get sponsors to actually shutdown a persons account, and that the spammer loses their cheque because of it. Common now, I know anti's are dumb and all, but seriously.

sponsors LOVE spam

money is money, it's as simple as that

they will only put on a show for the public to be satisfied

I heard of people that make sponsors 5000$ a day... which basicly gives the owner bragging rights and a new porsche, you really think he will close this guys account because a few people don't like it?

it's very simple, money makes the world go round

If they keep their shit out of my email box, i'll leave them alone... Until that point, I'll continue to report each and every one of them.

The sponsors may put on a show to try and please people reporting them, but if I get another solicitation the repeat offence will be reported to the FTC, and they do follow up and take care of it once they receive enough complaints.

And regarding "WTF is legitimate", The spam messages I report are the ones that are not compliant with can-spam, and therfore are illegal. The can-spam compliant ones don't bother me, my filter gets them and I never see them.

I get the impression that alot of people here make their living off spam... I don't care how much you make doing it, if you have to resort to spamming people to generate traffic you're still a bottom feeder.

Shutting down illegal mailers will help you to make more money if you are a legit + compliant sender

bottom feeder? You really have no clue how much heavy mailers make do you? Bottom feeder is way off from reality. Get a nice spam filter software and press delete. That is the only solution. I have never met anyone who "just makes a living" from spam.

Reporting a spammer to the FTC is the quickest way to get their affiliate ID changed

I've got a rough idea... I didn't say there wasn't alot of money in spam. That's not the point, there's alot of money in cocaine as well, it's still illegal.

I don't fuck around with other peoples business, but when I have to weed through their crap every day because they're too lazy to promote programs legitimately like the rest of us, then it becomes my business.

Spam is a lazy mans get rich quick scheme... It doesn't take brains to get bulletproof hosting, buy or rip a huge list with a WWW or usenet crawler, then fire away through email proxy's so your ISP won't shut you down. The fact of the matter is that it's illegal, and a royal pain in the ass for millions of people.

Yup.... Spam filters are good to have as well, but they don't catch alot of stuff because people keep using fake names and other methods of fooling the filters.

Not to mention being in this business, you really can't rely on spam filters... Half of my emails from affiliate programs end up in the junk folder because they set off the filters. So i have to sort through everything anyways.

Spammers are the reason that ISPs are more restrictive in what SMTP connections/messages they accept.

The thresholds that will make your message go to the Bulk are lower these days - thanks to Spammers.

This affects every legimitate and compliant permission-based email marketing company.

I have to adopt my mailing techniques and make substential investments to ensure Inbox delivery. This costs me money, thus making me less.

The less spammer exist, the more will I make as a legimitate sender.

Although I don't do it myself, I find it good that people like the thread starter report illegal SPAM.

No wonder why we're ass up in regulations for this or that. It's because people don't give a fuck and will do anything to make a buck. Turning a blind eye, so fucked up
