Steve Balmer was a co-founder. I think this also depends on what your definition of rich is.

Lame.

Are you saying we'd even know who Steve Balmer was if he worked by himself?

And if someone got all technical on DJ's post, no one ever works alone. There's always someone to report to, be it a boss, consumer(s), business relationships, etc.

Edit: Yes, what Tuga said.

Your point wasn't about striving to be #1 at what you do. You simply said employees can't be rich. The frustrations of people like Balmer are for another discussion.

I think what is even more the case . . .

If you work for other people, you'll never have control of your time.

That's the thing I like most about being an entrepreneur. I work when I choose to. I play when I choose to. I sleep when I choose to. Having control of your life is even more valuable than any amount of money.

people like that are 1 for every 10000

they most probably would be very sucessfull on their own (if for some reason they didnt decide to work for others in the first place)

What about Eric Schmidt? He was not a co-founder and certainly was brought on shortly around IPO. He works for other people and I'm willing to bet he's quite rich.

Okay but that's not what you said, now is it?

You originally said that "if you work for other people, you'll never be rich.".

It turns out you were wrong because as we've shown you there are lots of rich employees. It doesn't matter that you think they might have ended up richer on their own, something that incidentally you have no evidence to support either.

Each person should do what they enjoy doing... and really there is more to life than money... Someone working in a lab 80 hours a week searching for a cure for cancer (while working for other people) probably has more fullfilling life, than someone who became rich spamming porn sites for example (who did it all by himself)...

Not necessarily true. People can be born into money and work for others... or win a substantial amount of money and keep their job. I know quite a few people who are well-off and keep their jobs just to have something to do.

You can make investments. You can do all sorts of things to flip your money... however, if you live paycheck to paycheck and your job is limited as far as advances, chances are you'll never be rich

Wasn't it Chris Rock who said "(insert athlete's name) is rich, but the guy who signs his check is wealthy" ...?

So your definition of being rich is making more than your boss? That makes no sense.

How do you know you can make more on your own? Could I make more as #2 at Microsoft or more doing myself running a maid company here?

Preach on, Brother! Fuck the money; it's deciding where you're going to be on any given day and whether to set your alarm clock that matters. If you don't have day-to-day control over those factors, you're just another fuckin' serf.

REMINDER: if you work for other people, you'll never be rich.

so did you tell Bill Gates this?

you bought into alot of bullshit.
how many times have you seen a big company go down the tubes and the president of the company gets the "golden parachute" for millions of dollars?
and what is his next move?
get a job at another big company, run it into the ground and get that golden parachute again.
they work for others but they know how to work the system.
