After Shock Media 07-23-2005 12:59 PM

Is this always true?

abetech 07-23-2005 12:59 PM

Hell even if you won't get rich it is still better to work for yourself.

Babagirls 07-23-2005 01:00 PM

Harmon 07-23-2005 01:00 PM

Steve Balmer was a co-founder. I think this also depends on what your definition of rich is.

co-founder, and still cant compare to the real deal.

always #2

Tuga 07-23-2005 01:03 PM

You're always working for other people, unless you go digging for gold or someting.

:1orglaugh :1orglaugh if my net worth was in the BILLIONS, i'd gladly play 2nd, 3rd, 4th, or 5th fiddle. Fuck, I'll sweep out the orchestra pit. Fame and glory is overrated, be rich and anonymous.

Lame.

Are you saying we'd even know who Steve Balmer was if he worked by himself?

And if someone got all technical on DJ's post, no one ever works alone. There's always someone to report to, be it a boss, consumer(s), business relationships, etc.

Edit: Yes, what Tuga said.

Hinc 07-23-2005 01:05 PM

i agree...go build yourself something....for the fun of it, and you have a ticket in the lottery to be rich.

BVF 07-23-2005 01:07 PM

this is true unless you're a professional ball player or musician.

you know what i meant.

working for the man vs. running your own gig.

Im sure every secretary that had stock options at Google or M$ has more money then you and everyone else in this thread combined hehe

Your point wasn't about striving to be #1 at what you do. You simply said employees can't be rich. The frustrations of people like Balmer are for another discussion.

retarded example.

anyone could have made bank on goog stocks (particulary freelance stock investors)

KRL 07-23-2005 01:19 PM

True most of the time, but not always.

WarChild 07-23-2005 01:20 PM

There are employees at Microsoft that are far wealthier than you.

AlienQ - BANNED FOR LIFE 07-23-2005 01:21 PM

LOL...

I like all the excuses.

KRL 07-23-2005 01:21 PM

I think what is even more the case . . .

If you work for other people, you'll never have control of your time.

That's the thing I like most about being an entrepreneur. I work when I choose to. I play when I choose to. I sleep when I choose to. Having control of your life is even more valuable than any amount of money.

bottom line for me is do what you love and find a way to make it profitable, and help others along the way

people like that are 1 for every 10000

they most probably would be very sucessfull on their own (if for some reason they didnt decide to work for others in the first place)

yes, but with their skills, they would have been much more wealthier working for themselves.

microsoft is what it is because of such people.
they make it happen.

Za Ha 07-23-2005 01:29 PM

Doesn't this guy work for a company and not for himself...

if you work for other people, you'll never be rich.

WiredGuy 07-23-2005 01:32 PM

What about Eric Schmidt? He was not a co-founder and certainly was brought on shortly around IPO. He works for other people and I'm willing to bet he's quite rich.

WG

flirty 07-23-2005 01:33 PM

true UNLESS you were born with a silver spoon UNLIKE your boss!!!!

and that sucks!!! :disgust

wedouglas 07-23-2005 01:41 PM

some times working for other people is the first step to success. you cant always start on top o fthe world. :2 cents:

wedouglas 07-23-2005 01:45 PM

i think the thread should be changed to "if you work for other people, you'll have be the star. your definition of rich is fame.

Okay but that's not what you said, now is it?

You originally said that "if you work for other people, you'll never be rich.".

It turns out you were wrong because as we've shown you there are lots of rich employees. It doesn't matter that you think they might have ended up richer on their own, something that incidentally you have no evidence to support either.

High Plains Drifter 07-23-2005 01:48 PM

REMINDER: Steve Ballmer was not a co-founder of microsoft.

woj 07-23-2005 02:08 PM

Each person should do what they enjoy doing... and really there is more to life than money... Someone working in a lab 80 hours a week searching for a cure for cancer (while working for other people) probably has more fullfilling life, than someone who became rich spamming porn sites for example (who did it all by himself)...

Tiger is #1 :)

you can make alot but you'll never earn more than your boss...

Furious_Female 07-23-2005 04:05 PM

Not necessarily true. People can be born into money and work for others... or win a substantial amount of money and keep their job. I know quite a few people who are well-off and keep their jobs just to have something to do.

You can make investments. You can do all sorts of things to flip your money... however, if you live paycheck to paycheck and your job is limited as far as advances, chances are you'll never be rich

Wasn't it Chris Rock who said "(insert athlete's name) is rich, but the guy who signs his check is wealthy" ...?

So your definition of being rich is making more than your boss? That makes no sense.

How do you know you can make more on your own? Could I make more as #2 at Microsoft or more doing myself running a maid company here?

Tell that to the multimillionaires who got Microsoft, Home Depot, etc. stock when they worked there :)

Everyone works for other people. Bill Gates works for his employees, stock holders and customers. It's like a computer repair guy said to me once "I own this company but I have 800 bosses." :thumbsup

OldSchoolJim 07-23-2005 04:25 PM

I am already rich...and i work for someone....

tungsten 07-23-2005 04:26 PM

Preach on, Brother! Fuck the money; it's deciding where you're going to be on any given day and whether to set your alarm clock that matters. If you don't have day-to-day control over those factors, you're just another fuckin' serf.

CheneyRumsfeld 07-23-2005 07:30 PM

REMINDER: if you work for other people, you'll never be rich.

so did you tell Bill Gates this?

you bought into alot of bullshit.
how many times have you seen a big company go down the tubes and the president of the company gets the "golden parachute" for millions of dollars?
and what is his next move?
get a job at another big company, run it into the ground and get that golden parachute again.
they work for others but they know how to work the system.
