Very Disappointed With Apple. They're moving to Intel Processors

http://edition.cnn.com/2005/BUSINESS...pple.intel.ap/

SAN FRANCISCO, California (AP) -- Apple Computer is confirming that it is shifting to chips made by Intel for its Macintosh lines.

The announcement to drop chips made by I-B-M and Freescale Semiconductor comes from Apple's developer conference in San Francisco. The company says that all of its new Macs will be using Intel microprocessors by the end of 2007.

The decision means that Apple will be relying on the same kinds of chips used in systems that run Microsoft Windows. Analysts say the move risks alienating Apple's historically loyal users. Software now built for Macs will have to be rewritten and then may not work on older Apple machines.

By winning the business, Intel tightens its dominance of the PC processor business, where it now has an 80 percent market share.

If it's true that all Mac software will be re-written, what fucking point is there using a Mac?

its not really about the processor tho:

OSX is basicly unix and could run on any processor.

Just like windows that could run on a mac;s powerpc processor.

If you don't know why having to buy all new software and having new software work on my current Macs is a BAD thing, you need to sit and ponder awhile.

Apple notebooks running at a lower mhz than PCs are actually faster. You're comment isn't worth digging up the proof. Search it out yourself.

Apple going to Intel while Intel is putting DRM into their chips now. Can't escape the DRM.

actually the compiler is going to enable you to write your software for powerpc and x86 simultaneously so it's not really going to matter. the only way it will matter is for those companies that don't bother to try and compile a x86 version of their software and maybe you won't be able to get it. but even that is going to 1 year away before we start seeing the 1st macs with intel processors and 2 years before all of them are. most software and important programs are updated more than once every few years. so it's not a big deal at all, except in that it might open some more doors for the hardware and developing of the software which could be good. it will allow apple to concentrate on the presenting of it's software as superior to that of MS because the processor speed and hardware issue won't exist anymore.

thanks for your time

Don't bother, he's an idiot. I bet he thinks these 800Mhz machines are faster than his home dual 3Ghz Xeon:

It's a joke Mr. serious. I'm sure if you band together with your other Apple fanatics you can convert the world over. Personally, I hate the retarded things and everything they represent.

Hollywood Order: Apple Weds Intel

-- It could be because of the DRM hardcoded into the new Intel processors.

probably not, or at least not for 5 years from now. otherwise they wouldn't be able to really leverage selling their own hardware since a lot of the benefit is the OS and software that comes with the machine. for them to ever do that they'll have to make major changes such as no longer making machines, but it's quite possible that you'll see versions of the mac os in other things that aren't desktop computers such as digital convergence devices in the near future.

Looks like Apple's been planning this for quite awhile:

http://www.kottke.org/05/06/apple-switch-intel

For the last 5 years, every copy of OS X has been compiled on both PowerPC and Intel platforms.

I guess that won't be the case.

Apple is not going into the software business, their operating system will not run on other vendor's hardware. So you won't be running the Mac OS on Dell, HP or IBM, for example. and 2. While Windows is not explicitly supported, they won't do anything to prevent Windows from running on their hardware.

Ugh.. mac people are far too emotional. Like having your chips made by Intel is any fucking different than FUCKING IBM lol.
The software issue is the only problem here and it's not a big deal as there are several years to migrate.

You really don't know much....

That's exactly why this is a good thing... there is a huge misunderstanding on the difference between PC/Mac clock speeds... if they are both running on the same processors and have comparable speeds then the argument is gone.

Do you use a MAC because of the processor??? That's insane. I use Apple's because of the software and the user interface... what happens inside doesn't really concern me as long as it works.

Apple had their chance to be the dominant player in computers 20 years ago and blew it. And eventually Ipod will share the same face as Mac because of Steve's Jobs stupid insistence on proprietary crap. What's that saying? "Those that fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it".

It's like religion.. Macs aren't that bad.. it's just some of the people I can't stand
we're a mac free environment here.. but they're not that bad so long as you get a serious one and not those imac pieces of shit.
I almost wouldn't mind a G5 laptop for Protools and Mbox stuff.. but theres still no point when i can just get a nice Vaio or whatever and integrate it into the network better.

You miss my point. According to many sources, all new software will no longer work on my existing Macs. I've spent more than $10,000 in the last 9 months on Mac computers. If those reports are true, I'll have to replace them all to run new software.

I sure as hell hope Steve Jobs has a solution for this.

I love the Apple bashers, they never used OS X which is Free BSD with a nice GUI; much better OS than Windows.

The move to Intel must be part of some marketing plan, but so long as they keep refining OSX they could run on chipmunk processors and I would keep buying Macintosh Computers. Tiger is one hell of a good OS.

When Windows upgrades you need to buy a new computer to run the bloat, when Apple upgrades the OS runs faster than the OS they replaced on the same hardware.

If Macs were so great they'd sell themselves. As I said Apple had their chance and blew it. Don't expect me to feel sorry for them. Go into a store what is software made for WINDOWS. why? because only 2% of people that own a computer own an Apple. And it's been that way for YEARS. Now WHY hasn't that # grown AT ALL? Apple could have made their OS the donimant OS, but Steve Jobs had( and still has ) too big of an ego an couldn't see the forest for the trees.

I do not sell Apple I use Macintosh computers and they are worth everything they cost, which is more than Windows machines.

I made your argument hundreds of times when I sold computers to School Districts, I was right then; I would be wrong now. The extra cost of a Mac is offset by the reduced cost of labor and security software.

If you use applications that run on a Mac it is a better platform but it is not for everyone. However there is a reason many Macintosh users are fanatics, they have a good thing and they like it.

wrong again dono. the software will only not work on macs if they don't compile it to work on macs, but i do believe the new xcode released today compiles for both. and this is a transition not an instant hey you're fucked. software will be compiled for both for the next 2 years at minium and likely 3 to 4 years as they transition. so i guess if you don't ever get the upgrades on the new versions of software or anything then maybe 3 or 4 years from now your macs might not run the very latest version of some program.

I've used apples for 20 years and lectured classes using them. The only reason to use them these days is industry entrenched compatability ie desktop publishing and even that isn't critical anymore like it was even 5-10 years ago, familiarity with the platform or specfic programs that kick ass like final cut pro. Security is also a good one because no one gives a fuck about spending that much time to target 2% of computers when they can fuck up 98% and all the script kiddies are using pcs.

Personally I'd prefer to experience the net as my customers do. Especially when our network uses DRM etc. I don't even use Firefox.

PC, two mouse buttons...

PC 2, Mac 1... PC wins...
Plenty of mac users i know use microsoft intellimice because apple has been semi retarded in that side of things.. wooooo a mouse WHERE THE WHOLE MOUSE IS A BUTTON!! AND IT'S CLEAR!!!! lol 'tards. Talk about pissing on your consumers.

Also having to set up shortcuts instead of simply using the alt button pissed me off as a useability "feature"...

This is one point I used to argue until I hooked up my 2 button corless mouse to my mac. The right click action works even better on the Apple. Why the dumb asses in Steve Jobsland don't just conform and add a right button to the mouse I'll never know.
