Very Disappointed With Apple. They're moving to Intel Processors
http://edition.cnn.com/2005/BUSINESS...pple.intel.ap/
SAN FRANCISCO, California (AP) -- Apple Computer is confirming that it is shifting to chips made by Intel for its Macintosh lines. The announcement to drop chips made by I-B-M and Freescale Semiconductor comes from Apple's developer conference in San Francisco. The company says that all of its new Macs will be using Intel microprocessors by the end of 2007. The decision means that Apple will be relying on the same kinds of chips used in systems that run Microsoft Windows. Analysts say the move risks alienating Apple's historically loyal users. Software now built for Macs will have to be rewritten and then may not work on older Apple machines. By winning the business, Intel tightens its dominance of the PC processor business, where it now has an 80 percent market share. If it's true that all Mac software will be re-written, what fucking point is there using a Mac? |
apple will always suck
|
its not really about the processor tho:
OSX is basicly unix and could run on any processor. Just like windows that could run on a mac;s powerpc processor. |

What are the Apple notebooks up to now, something like 600mhz? :1orglaugh

Apple notebooks running at a lower mhz than PCs are actually faster. You're comment isn't worth digging up the proof. Search it out yourself. |

Apple makes better 'looking computers' I might even consider buying one now.

Apple going to Intel while Intel is putting DRM into their chips now. Can't escape the DRM.

Does this mean that maybe Apple will wake up and sell their os for win boxes. I would switch oses in a minute

Hollywood Order: Apple Weds Intel
-- It could be because of the DRM hardcoded into the new Intel processors. ? |

I am a loyal mac user and I welcome the change. The system will be the same just faster :)

Looks like Apple's been planning this for quite awhile:
http://www.kottke.org/05/06/apple-switch-intel For the last 5 years, every copy of OS X has been compiled on both PowerPC and Intel platforms. |

http://www.kottke.org/05/06/apple-switch-intel I guess that won't be the case. Apple is not going into the software business, their operating system will not run on other vendor's hardware. So you won't be running the Mac OS on Dell, HP or IBM, for example. and 2. While Windows is not explicitly supported, they won't do anything to prevent Windows from running on their hardware. |
RISC processors are better....what a loss :(
|
Ugh.. mac people are far too emotional. Like having your chips made by Intel is any fucking different than FUCKING IBM lol.
The software issue is the only problem here and it's not a big deal as there are several years to migrate. |
too bad they didn't invite AMD for that spot. ive allways liked AMD chips best.
truth be told, i wish i owned a mac. any serious webmaster or designer wouldn't diss on apple. |

Apple had their chance to be the dominant player in computers 20 years ago and blew it. And eventually Ipod will share the same face as Mac because of Steve's Jobs stupid insistence on proprietary crap. What's that saying? "Those that fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it".

It's like religion.. Macs aren't that bad.. it's just some of the people I can't stand :) we're a mac free environment here.. but they're not that bad so long as you get a serious one and not those imac pieces of shit. I almost wouldn't mind a G5 laptop for Protools and Mbox stuff.. but theres still no point when i can just get a nice Vaio or whatever and integrate it into the network better. |

You miss my point. According to many sources, all new software will no longer work on my existing Macs. I've spent more than $10,000 in the last 9 months on Mac computers. If those reports are true, I'll have to replace them all to run new software. I sure as hell hope Steve Jobs has a solution for this. |
Smart move by apple.. Intel rocks :D
|
People who buy apple, buy it for the looks
|
I love the Apple bashers, they never used OS X which is Free BSD with a nice GUI; much better OS than Windows.
The move to Intel must be part of some marketing plan, but so long as they keep refining OSX they could run on chipmunk processors and I would keep buying Macintosh Computers. Tiger is one hell of a good OS. When Windows upgrades you need to buy a new computer to run the bloat, when Apple upgrades the OS runs faster than the OS they replaced on the same hardware. |

I do not sell Apple I use Macintosh computers and they are worth everything they cost, which is more than Windows machines.
I made your argument hundreds of times when I sold computers to School Districts, I was right then; I would be wrong now. The extra cost of a Mac is offset by the reduced cost of labor and security software. If you use applications that run on a Mac it is a better platform but it is not for everyone. However there is a reason many Macintosh users are fanatics, they have a good thing and they like it. |

Personally I'd prefer to experience the net as my customers do. Especially when our network uses DRM etc. I don't even use Firefox. |
Mac, one mouse button...
PC, two mouse buttons... PC 2, Mac 1... PC wins... |

Also having to set up shortcuts instead of simply using the alt button pissed me off as a useability "feature"... |
