They're slick but overpriced. You could build one that's just as good for less.

I own an area 51 and I love it. great computers in my opinion, and yes somewhat overpriced but damn good quality. They are having a nice sale going on right now also, so if your getting one now would be the time.

Wow, you'd have to be a HUGE dork to buy one of those.

I guess if I had a kid that was a huge fan that might be OK. Not for an adult though.

In 2 years I have never used it. People say they are overpriced crap, and yeah you pay more for the name than you would say a dell, but crap they are not. My alienware is the best computer I have ever owned and when I buy another, I'll spend the extra money and get another alienware.

We get all of our computers built at:

http://www.hdnw.com/

Seven generations of computers have all lasted, many of which are still in use as file servers....Can't complain about that...

I will say, everyone I know who has an Alienware says it's worth the money...but, for a work station, which is what we have....I wouldn't spend it....we're pretty hard on our computers.

I still can't believe they cannot fix a battery recharging problem. They have attempted this feat 3 times in 11 months!
The last time I sent it in they apparently replaced the motherboard but obviously didn't bother testing it as it came back with the exact same problem?
Groundhog day?????

I have worked in the past as a computer technician and am currently spending far too much time as a hardcore gamer. This machine is absolutely incredible. I ordered an Area 51m 7700 (3.4 ghz P4, 2GB Memory, etc.) The performance is unparalleled and from a technical perspective, the machine runs smoothly with absolutely no software conflicts from the initial software installation. Alienware machines like this are for intense computer users who are willing to make sacrifices for the ultimate in power. Having said that, The notebook has approx. 1 hour of battery life for average use. If you're playing a game or making use of any graphics technology, chances are you'll get less than an hour. Additionally, the machine should be kept in a well ventilated area. It gets hot enough that I've positioned my machine so my video card vents are hanging off of my desk slightly. Lap use requires heat insulating clothing. Finally, expect to wait for your machine. As I said, ultimate in power requires sacrifice. Alienware builds each of their machines individually and it takes more time than might seem reasonable for your machine to be delivered. If want the best, get an Alienware and pay for it. If you want your machine tomorrow and don't typically use the term "machine" get a Dell.

After doing some research I decided to buy an Alienware to save the time of building my own. The online order process is extremely easy to use and they even make it easy to apply for financing. I placed the order on 5/13/05 and received a confirmation email within minutes. So far so good. Well, on 5/18 (one week after the order) I received my finanding paperwork (a paper copy of what was filled out online that required a signature and copy of my drivers license). I express mailed the paperwork back and once I had confirmation it had been delivered I called to authorize the card. This is where it gets a little strange. Upon getting through to the financing department (took less than 5 minutes) I had to give them my adress of the drivers license so they could place it in the computer. For anyone that is curious this is only done if the billing address is different than that listed on your DL. Well. while waiting for the questions to come up (they pull info from your credit file, which can go back 10 years) the phone diconnected. Complaint 1: No call back. As a result the authentication was aborted. I called back only to have the wrong address authenticated (miiscommunication). The third time the system said it was blocked and I was told to call back in 48 hrs. I said okay, but later called back about a question with the monitor I ordered and talked to a very nice lady who said my veriifcation should not be locked and that she would be happy to run it for me. I said okay and it came up as blocked again. This time I was told to wait 24 hrs, which I did only to get the same answer. Unable to verify because the account is blocked. At this point I was told to call back after the original 48 hr period had expired. That was today, 5/25 at 2:34 pm. At this point it still came up blocked and after talking to three people find out it is because the timer resets after every failed attempt. I was also told that I would have to wait until Friday (5/27) after 4:00pm to ensure that the blocked status had cleared. By this time I was a little frustrated since I have a computer that was ordered over a week ago, that is not even in the process of being built because the Alienware card it was purchased on is not yet actuvated. All a result of the authentication system screwing up. So now I am stuck between a rock and a hard place waiting for a third party system to clear a blocked status off my Alienware card so I can verify my identity. The worst part of the experience is not that they system blocked the account. I can understand systems screwing up. What gets me is that between the six people I have talked to I have gotten three different answers. It took me getting one of the finance reps to talk to her manager before I BELIEVED the answer I was getting. In short you need to know a few things before buying from alienware:

GOODS
1. Easy to order from
2. Quick to respond to request for order changes or general inquiries.
3. Will honor rebates that post after your system has been order, but with the caveat that the system has to be reconfigured with current prices. Still if you ordered you system with no rebates and then the next day one posts on the website know that they will honor it.
4. Sales people are top notch when it comes to being professional and trying to answer questions.

BADS
1. You do not always get a consistent answer when talking to different people.
2. The verification system used, as I understand it, is third party and not owned or operated by Alienware. Therefore, if it screws up there is nothing they can do about it.
3. Personnel know that there is nothing they can do about it and therefore and not very forthcoming with information. They simply tell you to wait until the block period has expired.

Lastly they did offer to place a "rush" on my system to make up for all the problems. A noble gesture, but one that does not do me any good since the monitor I ordered with my system went out of stock on 5/24 and I have to wait for it to arrive at the wharehouse anyway.

Will update.

5/27/05

Alienware card was authenticated today. In fact Raina was very helpful and even took the time to talk to enusre that my order went through to production. Waiting for confirmation email and delay time due to both processor and monitor ordered with system are on back order. Hopefully it will not be that long as they placed an expidite on the order.

juicy I own Area 51m 7700 and its the best machine I've ever had.

It's also made in America and tech support is in America.

I'll pay a little more for better quality and to support American jobs.
