What is it with Americans and the "defending my property" thing

Do you have that many burglars? Bad neighbours?

Here in Holland we dont talk about defending our property and we dont need to.

I cant imagine it being that bad in the states yet defending the house/family/kids whatever is such a sensitive thing for so many Americans. And im not even talking about the all the guns you need to "defend your property".

Is it part of your freedom thing? Its your house and yours only? The freedom to have your own place which nobody is allowed to enter?

Explain it to me...

Well, in some areas they do have a lot of break ins. But not where I live. Still all my neighbors have guns, love guns and have bumper stickers about guns.

I think the bottom line is that Americans are just greedy people.

Personally i think it has to do with the fake sense of freedom most Americans have.
Although freedom is very limited in America compared to tons of other countries its the only country where the subject is so sensitive. Every action is an "action of freedom".

In many states...if not most states...one cannot legally defend ones property. One is usually only allowed to defend ones self if one is being attacked...or another person that is under attack...and in most states one must retreat if retreat is possible before one is allowed to legally defend ones self. In addition in many states...if not most states...one can only meet force with similar or equal force. In other words one can only use deadly force if confronted with deadly force...and this inculdes someone breaking into your home.

Read a good American history book - you'll be fascinated. The theme of 'rugged individualism' is a recurring one. One's own land and property and protecting it was very important to those who bolted from Europe to make new lives in the New World. America's strengths are also its weaknesses.
What was accomplished in the United States and United States Jr.(Canada) is a very impressive feat - nothing but trees, mountains, plains, lakes only a short time ago really and look what those settlers and later on more immigrants from Europe accomplished.

In Holland a burglar can sue you if you hit him with a baseball bat when he tries to steal things out of your house and you catch him.

Long live America.

The law in many states...if not most states...is the same here. Criminals often sue and often win. A large number of Americans do not care what the law is though...and instead of hitting you with a bat...most will shoot you.

Non-Americans can't understand the fascination and obsession Americans have with guns - it's just passed on from generation to generation. American was settled at gunpoint at every turn - and as the cities of America were settled and grew the gun that killed all the Indians, ruled the Old West just became part of the American way of life. The right to bear arms is right there in the Constitution, more of the rugged individualism, every man controls his own destiny and if need be use your gun to protect your freedom even from the government.

Hmmm... Let's see, you're questioning the "moral values" of a country that elected George Dumbya Bush not only once, but TWICE?!?!

Who would a thunk it.

hahaha... too true, but one can't judge a nation full of people based on what less than half of them voted on.

The saying ?our home is our castle? idea was developed through many things. First, was many American immigrates from around the world were booted off their property or ancestral land due to kings, tyrants, or taxes. (Read Irish potato famine and the migration here) Second, after the Louisiana purchase many went west and actually homesteaded on dangerous Indian land or the natural resources were so valuable ie., gold in California or water rights for cattle in Texas. Meaning the country was so new we did not have solid law enforcement structure to protect our property or being. So the government passed a law stating our ?our home is our castle?. In short, Police yourself.

After living and traveling in Europe I know our laws must look funny to you. You have to remember we use to have open borders and took the ?unwanted? from all your countries. I laugh when I read here the Euro-trash slamming Americans. We built the best economy and trend setting country in the world.. When you think of Americans I assure you tulips, wooden shoes, wind mills, and fags don?t come into mind.

Well,

In the US, the MoFo has to be ALIVE "after" the bat swings, in order to sue, sometimes. If the skank is coming in through a window, wait til he's inside before you shoot him, otherwise, if he falls back outside the window, he's not an intruder.

I now live in Mexico and it's easy to take care of shitheads down here.
