The Brits are insane

Now, I know this isn't ALL Brits by any stretch, but holy shit:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/4581871.stm

I remember seeing a story on Discovery or somesuch about how the police in London were campaigning for STAB proof vests. The idea being that many crimes in the UK are backed up with knives.

Does it strike anyone that this might be a LITTLE proof that things like gun control aren't terribly effective at reducing crime? You take away guns, people grab knives and commit enough stabbings to warrant the same "proof" vests as our cops wear against guns. Now they want to take away a certain kind of knife. Does anyone honestly believe that if this goes through, that other bans will not follow?

My problem with a lot of the current liberal thought out there is that instead of taking care of the disease, only the symptoms are treated. These doctors aren't suggesting that marraige counseling should be mandatory, but knives that chould be used in domestic fights should be removed. Instead of making gun safety classes mandatory, lets remove the guns. These people want to make it impossible to commit a crime by removing the tools instead of the desire. The worst thing in this whole sordid mess is that many of these "experts" are the same ones that have degrees in science related areas and have studied how man became the dominant force. We are creative. We adapt. If a gun isn't there, we will grab a knife. If a knife has been removed, we will grab a pipe. If they ban plumbing we'll grab a baseball bat. If they make it so that you must show a permit to own a bat, we'll just tear up a floor board.

This isnt a pro gun or pro knife or pro crime post. Just a rant. If I have spelling errors please forgive.

Lots of "street" kids in the UK think they are gangstas by carrying knives, and the kids who are scared of attacks carry knives to defend themselves. To steal DJ's laugh -

Who do you think is a more effective killer: a guy with a gun or a guy with a knife?

I think I would be equally frightened of both. If somebody wanted to kill me, they'd find a way to do it.

That doesn't answer your question though, the gun is probably more effective. Though the knife is more effective than the fist. Do we really need knives? Suppliers can start doling out food in little chunks!

Seems to me it's simply some idiot researchers with the inability to see the big picture rather than 'the brits'. As far as guns go the UK has VERY good reasons for making them illegal and a quick glance at basic stuff like homicide stats will reveal why to anyone with a little intelligence.

And before idiots get carried away I don't believe a ban on guns in the US is the answer. Unfortunately it's far too late for it to be that simple.

Nope, a nice bottle of Beefeater with a lit cloth shoved down the neck would do nicely and it doesnt leave shells that are tracable back to any gun (not that many shells really do trace back all that well)

I'm really not meaning to pick on 'the Brits' I genuinely love the UK. I just see it as a few steps ahead of the US in a few ways. I see in the stab proof vests and knife ban suggestions our future if gun control comes through.

I'm again just struck by the absurdity of repeatedly trying to disable the baddies instead of preventing the baddies from going bad.

In response to 'Baddies going bad'

Unfortunately you will always have some prick who makes it his life goal to piss other people off, because he didnt have it good as a kid. Or just got fired after working for 6 years at McD's, and can't get another job because he failed all his GCSE's/O-Levels. It's part of life, banning knifes won't get anyone anywhere, it's a poor attempt at sturring up some media attention towards x-doctor/x-hospital/x-research clinic.

Life can be shit, deal with it. Heh.
