![]() I had a family member sign up for Vonage and they decided to keep their existing number.
Vonage immediately implemented the number into their system even though they have not even shipped the MDA device yet. The problem is within the Vonage network only. If one Vonage user tries to call the number then they go directly to the Vonage voice mail system. The voice mail is using the default greeting and storing messages that the new customer will not be able to receive until they get their device OR they log into their Vonage account and check through the web interface. Vonage has also provided a temporary number that their technician claimed would forward my Vonage based calls to their outside network number. That was bullshit to get me off the line because when I called that number, I was once again dumbed into the default Vonage voice mail system. So....Basically if you use Vonage and somebody you know signs up with them, there is a period of up to 20 days that you will not be able to reach them from the Vonage network. Of course, if you call the original number from a phone that is not Vonage related then it will ring through as normal......UNLESS the customer has disconnected their normal phone line during that 20 day window.....THEN you will need to call their temp Vonage "Soft Phone" number until the ownership of the original number is transferred over to Vonage. They say this transfer is now available to be done through email and must customers are getting it done in about 2 days. |

It's a great service. I've been using it for about a year now. Just be prepared for a small problem if you keep your current number and other Vonage customers try to call you from their Vonage lines. |

What's the 911 issue you mentioned in your subject line?

There's been a lot of shit on the news lately that suggests that Vonage does not work with 911. That's complete bullshit. You just have to be smart enough to follow the bold red text on their site to turn it on. This just goes to show how incredibly stupid a lot of people are. |

We have AT&T Callvantage VoIP and have never had a problem with it. Of course, there will always be the occasional cable internet outage but that's going to happen regardless.
We can log on to their web site and see incoming and outgoing calls as well as receive notification of voice mail messages. There is a separate number to dial for retrieving voice mail messages so we had no issues with that. Vonage is around $24.99 a month, right? We pay $34 and change (including tax) with AT&T Callvantage. It's another option to consider.

I saw that it took that long to transfer a number also so I just got a new number and then forwarded the old office number to the new Vonage number.
Worked perfectly. ![]()
