I was in Cancun 4 years ago. I absolutely loved it. The ocean was crystal clear blue and snorkeling was great. I stayed at the Omni, which was beautiful. Both the pool and the jaccuzi had swim up bars that never stopped serving. I also got some great jewelry at fantastic prices. I'd love to go back. The only thing I would recommend is staying at your hotel and in the tourist sections. The poverty of the city itself is very depressing. I don't know if it's changed much in the past 4 years, but I had the best time of my life there. (even WITH my ex-husband.)

I have been to that area every year for the last 5 years... Cancun is a party town... catering to 19yr olds and under or those over 19 that still party till the sun comes up... a bit of a concrete jungle, with a strip of hotels...

Cozumel, very close by ( 20min flight, 1.5hrs by taxi/ferry ) is a mix of relaxing, more of a mexican flair, equally nice if not nicer beaches and a rental jeep can put you on a private stretch of white sandy beach.. unheard of in Cancun...

Playa del Carmen... the Mayan Riviera... is alot like Cozumel... places to party but more laid back... I just got married there at the www.royalhideaway.com . Very quiet high end hotel... 24hr room service...
email at the hotel... nice food... and 2 nights a week, the g-string extravaganza ) ( dont ask )

Without a doubt that general area has some of the nicest beaches in the world, decent divings, deep sea fishing, partying... you name it...

Hope this helps

Stephan

I dug Squid Row...Cabo Wabo was dead when I was there, so I didn't like it at all. Squid Row was probably the best night spot there in my opinion!

Fine hookers there too!

thx Supercharged, sounds like u enjoy it (5 years in a row)!!! I fit in the category of over 19 that still party till the sun comes up.

what about the liquor? if you are a beer drinking or a hard liquor drinker, is it a problem to get some good drinks? i've heard a few contain laxatives, not very nice!

if i go down, what should i watch for?

I'd be adventurous & get out & enjoy the Cancun if I were you. I'm sure there's plenty more than a resort! Hell...you can experience a resort ANYwhere...

cabo was okay - i was there in june.

el squid was definately fun - I wish we had a place like that in Seattle - but if that is your idea of a "great party town" - we're fucked.

I want to try some other places - cuz a one "hot spot" town isn't really my idea of a "destination" worth going to

i heard some hard liquors are mixed with goat milk which is also used as a laxative! is someone just fucking around with me or is that true?!?!

am i the only one to hear that ppl get diarrhea when they party at cancun? i hear it's a mix of the different foods and drinks that your body isn't use to, along with heavy drinking of course.

hold on mr. defensive -

I said I thought el squid was a fun place - but it was the only place. had there have been 4 or 5 places like squid row I thought it would have been a better expierence. 7 days of going to el squid every night from 10 - whenever you manage to go back hottubbing / et cetera got a little ol'

and the Hookers... the ones that hung out between el squid and cabo wabo across from the hard rock... LOOKED 14

Okay, man. I wasn't bein' defensive...just retorting to what you said.

Ya gotta venture out, man. Squid wasn't the only place around there. We tore up every place we set foot in. And I thought Cabo Wabo was lame. We even had all of Hard Rock dancin' on the tables! The staff there was so entertained that they kept feedin' us free shots all night. Imagine that...the Hard Rock of all places being fun. W

hen you're payin' off the law & bouncers everywhere ya go to let'cha go...ya know ya had a good time.

Maybe it was just the right vibe for us...who knows.

And as far as the hookers go...I didn't card any of 'em, but everyone I talked to said they were all in their early 20s. I have a weekness for the latin girls, so...I was diggin' 'em.

Ah yes, Cancun... I was there 3 or 4 years ago, stayed at the Gran Caribe Real, all-inclusive. Kinda dumb IMO to go all-inclusive unless you're there with the wife and kids or are much older. We hardly spent any time at the hotel, except at 4 or 5 in the morning to get some food, and go to bed for a few hours before starting again...

Yeah it was a pretty happening place...hmmmm, there were a few very big clubs down there, Coco Bongo & another one I forget the name...

Of course, a fair bit of time was spent at a strip club called Chilly Willy's...

BruceM, by friends are going all inclusive. so far everyone i've talked to has done the same thing.

the cover charges of most the bars is $20 or so and all you can drink, isn't it? so even if u venture off, it's still not that expensive. then again, why pay all inclusive if it's so cheap?

how was Chilly Willy's?!?

Cancun is not cheap IMO. It's basically like going to any big US city...

But yeah, that's about right $20 all you can drink...oh I remember the other big night club down there La Boom, or Tequila Boom.

Chilly Willy's was...uhhh...pretty good, LOL!!! If you want to check out another good strip club/lap dance/etc. place go to Plaza 21, there is a huge complex of places in one location.

Shit just had a bad flashback of being sick at Fat Tuesday's...

Hey Red I stayed at the Omni too. I was supposed to stay at some other place but there over booked and tried to send me to shitty two twin bed room on one of the high up floors of the omni. But I raised enough hell that they ended up putting me and my girl in one of those beach front villas at the omni. It was huge. I had 3 stories and like 3 balconies. I could spit into the pool or on the beach. PHAT! BTW get the all you can eat or drink package. It rocks. Oh and dont forget to use sun screen even if your just checking the beach out when you first get there. OUWWWWWCH

I spent a week in Cancun over Christmas, was nice. Americanized but not too much so.

We stayed at the new Marriot, the JW Marriot, which is right next to the old Marriot.

There's a ton of stuff to do besides party but there is plenty of partying going on. Lots of American restaurants like Outback, Ruths Chris, etc if you don't want to eat local food. There are two malls in town that have tons of great restuarants and shopping as well.

You can rent a car down there and drive yourself out to the ruins or stuff like that if you like but you'd be better off to just pay for a helicopter tour if you want to see them without wasting an entire day driving -- Cancun itself has nice roads but once you get out of town they suck. So what looks like an hour drive is really more like 3-4 hours.

Lots of boats to rent for the day to fish or snorkel, jetskis, parasails, etc right on the beach to rent.

Senor Frogs, La Boom, etc are open 24 hours and tons more bars etc.

I was in Playa del Carmen (about 40 miles from Cancun) for Christmas and the New Year and loved every minute of it except for the lack of Guinness. If your into R'n B check out the Tequila Barrel on 5th Ave. they have some pretty decent bands on there and more different types of Tequila than you can shake a stick at
Tip of the day: Don't walk through the security at Cancun airport wearing steel cap boots like I did

Hell, all that spam and no refcode? You have a lot to learn my boy.

Does that look like an Interstate highway in the background of one of the beach pics? WTF...hardly what I call a quiet paradise.

I spent a week in Cozumel and if I could have, I would have stayed.. We crashed at an all inclusive resort (food, room, and drinks! The diving was fantastic, 100' down and the water was still 80 degrees.

I definitely will be back there again soon!

Ludedude, what spam?! and what refcode could i possible use?!

i'm just trying to figure out if calinda beach is alright to go to. i don't think that's an interstate in the background. although calinda is closer to the beginning of the beach than the other 1,000 resorts on the same beach.
