I have been to that area every year for the last 5 years... Cancun is a party town... catering to 19yr olds and under or those over 19 that still party till the sun comes up... a bit of a concrete jungle, with a strip of hotels...
Cozumel, very close by ( 20min flight, 1.5hrs by taxi/ferry ) is a mix of relaxing, more of a mexican flair, equally nice if not nicer beaches and a rental jeep can put you on a private stretch of white sandy beach.. unheard of in Cancun...
Playa del Carmen... the Mayan Riviera... is alot like Cozumel... places to party but more laid back... I just got married there at the
www.royalhideaway.com . Very quiet high end hotel... 24hr room service...
email at the hotel... nice food... and 2 nights a week, the g-string extravaganza

Without a doubt that general area has some of the nicest beaches in the world, decent divings, deep sea fishing, partying... you name it...
