I would recommend shoutcast as the streaming server solution
The number of listeners * bit rate = traffic / second At 500 listeners max for a station you can expect about 200 connected throughout the day if your station is popular 200 * 48kbps = 9.6Mbps -- this would require roughly a 10Mbps server Scale the # of listeners up and you'll see how much bandwidth you would require. We can guide you along and help you setup everything, ICQ: 4930562 and it would run about $550/month for the example quoted above

Thanks for the extensive info! Now, what do I need for
1) 100 listeners per hour 2) 300 4) 1000 5) 5000 for bitrates 24, 48, 96, 128? Thank you. Hint: the hosting companies that answer these questions have the best chance of getting my business. |

bit rate X # of listeners / 1000 = # of megabits / sec Then to get the number of MB transfer you use the following forumula ( bit rate / 8 ) x # of listeners x 60 secs x 60 min = # of MegaBytes transferred per hour For Example: 24kbps X 100 listeners = 2.4mbps or roughly 10MB of transfer per hour 128kbps X 100 listeners = 12.8mbps or 5.7GB of transfer per hour 24kbps X 5000 listeners = 120mbps or 54GB of transfer per hour 128kbps x 5000 listeners = 640mbps or 288GB of transfer per hour To give you a rough idea, 10mbps is about $550 100mbps is about $4000 Now mbps allows you transfer this at full speed for the ENTIRE month with that price, and GB pricing starts at about $0.40/GB and goes down to about $0.15/GB *In regards to your other question with having a server in 1 location and your computer in another, its really quite simple. You install winamp and configure it to send to a shoutcast server by using a simple plugin and pointing it to the IP address. Then winamp can be used to either play pre-recorded material or use line in to relay whatever is being played/heard to your server and then out to the rest of the world. Best of all shoutcast is free!
