ive had a toshiba broke down was nice and compact but the fingermouse was hell, they lost that luckely, had a compaq, parts were hell priced, got a hp now, was cheaper then the dell, got dells here everywhere but the latt are ok, the others arent and Im not spending 2k on a laptop Im using once per month...

If you got cash go for Alienware, theyre expensive but specs are amazing

If you want stylish, light, and battery life, you can't go past an asus.
I just went through the process of buying for one. They kick ass over any other option - and i went over Apple, Dell, IBM, Toshiba, Compaq/HP, Alienware, Sony.

I have a laptop w/ DVD Burner / wifi / bluetooth / 1280x768 / usb / firewire / memory card reader (v. cool) / lan / TV out / svideo out / 80gb hdd / 750mb ram / INBUILT wireless logitech mouse / inbuilt 1.3MP webcam / camera / mic / up to 7 hours battery

weighs only 1.6KG, and less than an inch thick.
Amazing.
W5000 series.
The v6000 is damn nice, too.

I've got to say, I CAN'T see how any of the other systems can really compete to this. Compaq / HP laptops of this weight only START at 1k over this price. IBMs are as ugly as sin.
Apples start to compare, but at the end of the day, they're apples.

Toshiba only starts at double the price.

Without sounding arrogant - I'm very confident that if you cross compare features, cost, style and weight, these things come out on top.

Toshiba and IBM are the best out there
everybody knows that
they've been releasing those since day 1 and are known to work forever
nobody can say that about dell or sony

I have a Toshiba... it's nice but the keys started fading out with about 4 months of use... pathetic. Also had to have them replace some sealant because the laptop was getting too hot and crashed it. Maybe I didn't take all the right precautions... I did have it running all day sometimes (is this wrong?)

It's the only one laptop I've ever had, I don't know how others compare. I've never had a full desktop computer with any of the problems I had with my Toshiba laptop. They won't replace the key pad because it's not in the warranty.

As for Sony, I know several people that work for Sony and they say they'd never buy a Sony product. According them Sony is living off it's established brand name but no longer produces anything of lasting quality (durability).

I suppose I will try a Dell next time.

i got an acer travelmate 8004 a few weeks ago.
nothing to complain yet!

i was looking into ibm too, but their pixel policy scared me. they replace your display only if you have i think it was more than 10 defect pixels.
so what, if you got bad luck you get a notebook for a few thousand $ and in worst case you´ve got 9 defect pixels in the middle of the screen (ok very unlikely, but possible) and your stuck with it.

For the best bang for the buck, with some durability: Dell Inspiron's.
For something more longer lasting: IBM ThinkPads
Something in between?: Toshiba, but they can seem to be pricey.

As far as Acer and HP, i don't prefer those, only because i've had to fix those more often than the ones i mentioned above. And of those fixes, most were not of end-user causes.

I definitely do not even consider Sony's... they might be cool-looking with some nice features, but you get the point here. Those cool features cover-up everything else that the Sony Laptop VAIO's lack.

from what i´ve heard acer´s quality wasn´t that good in the past, but the current generation has improved a lot.

I like Dell. The Inspiron line is a great value for the money. Fast Pentium M processor and great battery life. Plus the docking station it fits in is quite handy for the home office.

Toshiba and IBM are, to my experience, the best. Toshiba is quality all the way, but the price refelcts that.. IBM is the best choice if you want more power for less money, though.

Did you pick Sony? good choice if you did.

I'm in the market for a new laptop but Sony stopped making the X505 and the replacement isn't upto much in comparison.

Currently got Sony and it has been fine for nearly 2 years
