Janis Joplin...........

Keeeeerist! The only song I ever heard her sing was "Me And Bobby McGee" back in the 70's. Listening to her CD now. This broad could fucking sing the blues!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And her guitar backing is fantastic, too!

(ain't the business, but I had to share my thoughts on her!)

Listen to some Janis, and then listen to some early Led Zepplin. Three guesses where Robert Plant picked up that style.

Did you know that "Me and Bobby McGee" was written by actor (and sometime singer) Kris Kristofferson? He and Janis had a thing going on before she OD'ed.

Her band was actually pretty sloppy, but sometimes that works when you're playing the blues. Big Brother and the Holding Company, as well as the Kozmic Blues Band, that backed Janis were great at live music and creating a bluesy vibe.

Don't get me wrong, I love the music of Janis. She did one of the best versions of "Summertime" ever, and if you can't feel her pain in "Ball and Chain", then you ain't never had dem ol' kozmic blues...

So here is one for you - I was living in Japan in the 70's and I attended this all night rock festival, and in between acts they played tracks over the PA from a new album that I learned later was called "Hotel California" by the Eagles.

When I heard the title track, I felt certain that it was written about Janis.

A few years later I learned that Don Henley was one of the pretty boys that Janis called friends (like Kris Kristofferson).

I've never heard this theory elsewhere, but I've always felt the "Hotel California" is about Janis:

On a dark desert highway
Cool wind in my hair
Warm smell of colitas
Rising up through the air
Up ahead in the distance
I saw a shimmering light
My head grew heavy, and my sight grew dim
I had to stop for the night

There she stood in the doorway
I heard the mission bell
And I was thinking to myself
This could be Heaven or this could be Hell
Then she lit up a candle
And she showed me the way
There were voices down the corridor
I thought I heard them say

Welcome to the Hotel California
Such a lovely place
Such a lovely place (background)
Such a lovely face
Plenty of room at the Hotel California
Any time of year
Any time of year (background)
You can find it here
You can find it here

Her mind is Tiffany twisted
She's got the Mercedes Benz
She's got a lot of pretty, pretty boys
That she calls friends
How they dance in the courtyard
Sweet summer sweat
Some dance to remember
Some dance to forget

So I called up the Captain
Please bring me my wine
He said
We haven't had that spirit here since 1969
And still those voices are calling from far away
Wake you up in the middle of the night
Just to hear them say

Welcome to the Hotel California
Such a lovely Place
Such a lovely Place (background)
Such a lovely face
They're livin' it up at the Hotel California
What a nice surprise
What a nice surprise (background)
Bring your alibies

Mirrors on the ceiling
Pink champagne on ice
And she said
We are all just prisoners here
Of our own device
And in the master's chambers
They gathered for the feast
They stab it with their steely knives
But they just can't kill the beast

Last thing I remember
I was running for the door
I had to find the passage back to the place I was before
Relax said the nightman
We are programed to recieve
You can check out any time you like
But you can never leave

- Eagles

Janis was well known for her Mercedes Benz song and she passed away in 1969, and lord knows she had lots of pretty boys that she called friends.

Time for me to put on a Janis album...

Cheers...RIP Janis,

LOL...yep, sure enough as soon as I finished my post I put on "Joplin Live In Concert" and saw that some of the songs were from 1970 (with the Full Tilt Boogie Band).

Oh well, it's only rock n' roll...(but I like it).

Probably the same CD I have, "18 Essential Songs". My favorite is the first trac, "Trouble In Mind", the so called "typewriter tape". She and guitar player were in the living room and sang the song to the tape machine. In the background you can hear someone typing on the older manual typewiters. The guitar backing is boss on this song!

Very true about her life. People said same thing about Tom Jones' voice too, but he's still belting them out. Janis' may have failed her too, as you say.

My favorite Janis Joplin song is "TRY (Just a little bit harder)"

Reminds me of college and post-college studies in the San Francisco Bay Area. Golden Gate park. Ocean Beach. Filmore. Ah... memories I went to school there in the 90s.

Try, try, try just a little bit harder
So I can love, love, love him, I tell myself
'Cause I'm gonna try, oh yeah, just a little bit harder
So I won't lose, lose, lose him to nobody else, yeah.
Hey, I don't care how long it's gonna take ya
But if it's a dream I don't want No I don't really want it
Yeah if it's a dream I don't want nobody to wake me.

Yeah I'm gonna try, oh yeah, just a little bit harder
So I can give, give, give, give him every bit of my soul.
I'm gonna try, oh yeah, just a little bit harder
So I can show, show, show him love with no control, yeah.
Hey! I don't care how long it's gonna take ya
But if it's a dream I don't want
No I don't really want it
Yeah if it's a dream I don't want nobody to wake me.
Hey, dig it! Yeah! Yeah yeah yeah!
Yeah, yeah, yeah, all right.

Try oh yeah, hey, try oh yeah, Lord, Lord, Lord,
Try oh yeah, try oh yeah, Lord, Lord, Lord,
Try oh yeah yeah, try, whoa, try oh yeah, Lord, Lord, Lord,
Push, work, push, work, oh yeah, try, oh yeah hey!
Try oh yeah, hey try oh yeah,
Try Lord, try, try, you ain't trying man
You're not trying out man, come up with it.
Come on, that's a wanker that listens to words, man.
Hey you gotta work all night
Hey little girl, gotta push on
You gotta need
Work a little more, hey, try a little more,
Need a little more
Yeah, work on, push on, move on, move on,
You gotta work for it, you gotta work on it
Push on, need on, move on,
Move on, hey hey hey.

you're an idiot

The Doors were one of the most important bands to come out in the 60s.
For my personal taste in music, THE most important.
Everything else musically at that time was flowers and sunshine hippy music. The Doors introduced the idea of dark conceptual imagery to music - they really started the whole "goth" music movement. So many bands and singers were influenced by Morrison & cohorts. Musically, yea, they sometimes made odd choices but listen to other shit from the 60s and you'll see how revolutionary they were.

You need to compare bands to their contemporaries when rating them, not to what's going on now.

Doors, Beatles, Joplin and Hendrix - all very important and influential - other then that, most of the 60s blew.

I like the doors a lot, but even I must agree with you. Definitely overrated, Joplin as well.

Hotel California cover was shot in the lobby of the Lido Hotel which was very popular with rock stars in the 60's. The Eagles may have been talking about Janis. She frequented the Lido.

It's a wonder the Lido is still standing at Yucca & Wilcox in Hollywood. Los Angeles has always been guilty of tearing down all the buildings that have character.

I didn't know that. I lived on Yucca back in... 92 I think it was. Back before it was somewhat "cleaned up" and the 18th street hang lived there. We always had shootings and shit right outside our apartment. It was crazy. I moved there right after high school to go to MIT for a year... Good times.

Hotel California is one of my favorite albums of all time. Like Janis, The Eagles will never go out of style.

*back from pregnant bikini show*

Man... last time I was in Hollywood and drove through there, all the crack houses that were once up were gone, a parking garage has been put up, the streets has direction now and you can only drive so far... It's MUCH better than when I lived there. It was a freakin' war zone when I lived there.

What happened was I went there knowing NOTHING about the area and it all looks shitty anyway... so I see this place in the daytime, took it, flew home and drove out.

Arrived at Yucca Street about 3am. Had to pass dope boys and gang guys who were beating on my U-Haul truck as I drove by. I was scared to get out but I had to, rang to the manager to let me in the parking area with my truck and loaded in. I made it.

The next night at about 10pm all hell broke loose. There was several drive by shootings on the corner where my building was, gang members everywhere until the ghetto bird flew in with it's blinding lights and lit the area up like it was noon. Police come break it all up and it gets quiet until about 4am... hell breaks loose again as I awake to several gun shots outside my window.

That was pretty much the same story for about a year. Oh how I miss that place.

Now... it may still be a war zone, I wouldn't know... I'm just saying that it LOOKS better than it did.
