would you pay $20k+ a year on property taxes?
wow, i know some of you fellas roll in some nice cash, but someone told me today that they pay $22k a year just in property taxes on their home in NY. the house is valued at around 800k and is in a decent neighborhood.
i dont think i could see myself dropping almost 2k a month just on taxes alone. are taxes this bad in some other states as well? |

Taxes in the North East are so high because the costs of services are higher. Teachers make 100K per year, police, fire and other civil servants can make 80K on average.
Then you add in the other things like union road workers etc. and there you have the reason why you pay out the ass for property takes |

Property taxes SUCK and NY's is insane at that rate ... sounds slightly off for an 800k house.
... and the bottom line is the more YOU MAKE ... the MORE UNCLE SAM TAKES! This tax, that tax and the other tax! Sad to say because it really does suck, but - at least interest and property tax is deductible! |

CA is based on how much you pay for the home. 1 or 1.5% . . . that would be a very expensive home. |

CA actually has below average RE taxes compared to the rest of the country. The taxes are set at 1.0% of the price you paid, with annual maximum increases of 2.0%. (there can be some direct assessments added on top but those usually aren't too much).
Hence, the $800K house mentioned above can't have higher base than $8000 per year...with maybe a couple of hundred extra for direct assessments.

note: the beauty/flaw of Prop 13 is that two identical houses can have wildly varying taxes based on when they sold. If I bought my house in 1980 for $200K, my taxes are prob $3000 per year while if my neighbor just bought an identical house for $800K, he'll pay the $8K+...this is why we are in such financial pain here in CA - RE taxes aren't logical and honestly too low.

That is about right in the area of NJ that I live in. I am paying 24k plus in taxes. Craziness. NJ is even thinking of not allowing me to deduct them on my NJ tax return now. Taxes are becoming out of control everywhere. But that is the world we live in I guess.

for me almost 12k a year
The tax millage rate where I live is 24.85. That's $24.85 per 1000 dollars what your home's value. That can be alot if you recently purchased or if you're not homesteading it. Also when homesteaded they can only increase your tax 3% a year. |

I pay about 9k for my house in LA, and I'm buying another house in Spanish Trail section of Las Vegas for 1.125m which will probably put me over the 20k mark since I'm keeping both houses.
If you wanna play, you gotta pay ;) |

20k is crazy but ya can't complain too much. Now, the maintenance on most of these damn condos is out of control! You are talking about double the taxes!

That does suck but getting a house is the best thing that you can do maybe she will settle for an alternative ever think about getting a condo? Paying rent does you no good at least with a house or condo you are building equity.

43 acres ... property tax = $325 a year and that includes the local school tax ... Nice to live in the boonies.
This is why I also don't mind running when the fire alarm sounds off either. |
