would you pay $20k+ a year on property taxes?

wow, i know some of you fellas roll in some nice cash, but someone told me today that they pay $22k a year just in property taxes on their home in NY. the house is valued at around 800k and is in a decent neighborhood.

i dont think i could see myself dropping almost 2k a month just on taxes alone. are taxes this bad in some other states as well?

XPays 04-20-2005 07:17 PM

my prop taxes in s.f. would make you sick to your stomach - 5 fig's per year as well

Spunky 04-20-2005 07:17 PM

Wait until you're married and the wife forces you to buy a home :(

pxxx 04-20-2005 07:19 PM

That is kind of deep for property tax, it is around 11k a year here.

pornguy 04-20-2005 07:19 PM

Hell NO!!!

I refuse to finance anything that I can not pay on a mac donalds salary!

ratemysize 04-20-2005 07:20 PM

taxes here in alabama on property are great, i have 80 acres in an unincorporated county..

Love Brokers 04-20-2005 07:22 PM

Sounds right for property in N.Y. California and Arizona probably about the same.

spunkmaster 04-20-2005 07:25 PM

Taxes in the North East are so high because the costs of services are higher. Teachers make 100K per year, police, fire and other civil servants can make 80K on average.

Then you add in the other things like union road workers etc. and there you have the reason why you pay out the ass for property takes :)

Property taxes SUCK and NY's is insane at that rate ... sounds slightly off for an 800k house.

... and the bottom line is the more YOU MAKE ... the MORE UNCLE SAM TAKES!

This tax, that tax and the other tax!

Sad to say because it really does suck, but - at least interest and property tax is deductible!

:)

CA is based on how much you pay for the home. 1 or 1.5% . . . that would be a very expensive home.

WiredGuy 04-20-2005 07:35 PM

I know a guy who pays over 20k/year in automotive insurance. Insurance!!

emthree 04-20-2005 07:49 PM

CA actually has below average RE taxes compared to the rest of the country. The taxes are set at 1.0% of the price you paid, with annual maximum increases of 2.0%. (there can be some direct assessments added on top but those usually aren't too much).

Hence, the $800K house mentioned above can't have higher base than $8000 per year...with maybe a couple of hundred extra for direct assessments.

BradShaw 04-20-2005 08:32 PM

I pay well over $50k a year in property taxes. It sucks.

cool1g 04-20-2005 08:33 PM

note: the beauty/flaw of Prop 13 is that two identical houses can have wildly varying taxes based on when they sold. If I bought my house in 1980 for $200K, my taxes are prob $3000 per year while if my neighbor just bought an identical house for $800K, he'll pay the $8K+...this is why we are in such financial pain here in CA - RE taxes aren't logical and honestly too low.

HighRoller 04-20-2005 08:38 PM

I actually was just looking this up 1 hour ago
saw that $1mil house where I live
$7-10k a year in property taxes

$200k starting homes is around 1500/yr in taxes

Screaming 04-20-2005 08:40 PM

hell no i wouldnt pay 2k a month in taxes

That is just sickening, what the hell does he drive?

Wiggles 04-20-2005 08:45 PM

i don't even make $20k a year, well maybe this year i did if i include web profits.

mrsexkey 04-20-2005 08:52 PM

That is about right in the area of NJ that I live in. I am paying 24k plus in taxes. Craziness. NJ is even thinking of not allowing me to deduct them on my NJ tax return now. Taxes are becoming out of control everywhere. But that is the world we live in I guess.

BV 04-20-2005 08:54 PM

for me almost 12k a year

The tax millage rate where I live is 24.85. That's $24.85 per 1000 dollars what your home's value. That can be alot if you recently purchased or if you're not homesteading it.

Also when homesteaded they can only increase your tax 3% a year.

Sosa 04-20-2005 09:01 PM

fucking taxes suck period. You get taxed on so much shit. My company makes money, I pay taxes. The company cuts me a check, I pay taxes. I got buy food with that money, I get taxed. FUCK TAXES heh.

Sorry, just a vent after paying my stupid ass social security and unemployment taxes today.

Babagirls 04-20-2005 09:36 PM

fuck all taxes!!!!! :(
20k is insane.

beemk 04-20-2005 09:45 PM

i only pay about 2k a year, im very happy with that

dig420 04-20-2005 10:43 PM

I pay about 9k for my house in LA, and I'm buying another house in Spanish Trail section of Las Vegas for 1.125m which will probably put me over the 20k mark since I'm keeping both houses.

If you wanna play, you gotta pay ;)

Pornwolf 04-20-2005 11:08 PM

20k is crazy but ya can't complain too much. Now, the maintenance on most of these damn condos is out of control! You are talking about double the taxes!

xclusive 04-20-2005 11:14 PM

That does suck but getting a house is the best thing that you can do maybe she will settle for an alternative ever think about getting a condo? Paying rent does you no good at least with a house or condo you are building equity.

Then if you hire some employees you have L&I, Unemployment and SSN taxes you pay for the employee not counting any health insurance. That's right employers pay most of the unemployment taxes in most states !

JFPdude 04-21-2005 12:07 PM

43 acres ... property tax = $325 a year and that includes the local school tax ... Nice to live in the boonies.

This is why I also don't mind running when the fire alarm sounds off either.

deniska 04-21-2005 12:07 PM

buy a new house.. 7 years no tax on new houses in new york city.. or pay the property taxes.. you are still writing them off at the end of the year even if its 20k.. :2 cents:
