all things being equal, what brand of computer would you buy?

Howdy. Im looking to buy a 2nd computer. Looking to spend $900 maximum(for the computer, witout monitor)
im looking at DELL and SONY VAIO...i can get a 1.5 GH p4 with 256 MB ram and a geforce 2 and 40 GB of hard drive. Can i do better than that with another brand? What brand would you go with?

I'd buy a Dell. Reliability and service are excellent. I bought one almost 2 years ago and the original HDD failed a few weeks ago. They sent a guy over with a new one in less then 24 hours; you can't top that for service. They answer their support phones within 5 minutes usually too. I know when I buy a new computer this upcoming year I'm buying another Dell.

Here's a TIP:

Buy Dell. Best warranty, service and performance for many years. I've got tons of Dell computers and couldn't be happier. If you want a MACK DADDY computer in your budget check out their factory outlet, their best kept secret... all machines are ready to ship and come with a SAME AS NEW warranty. Plus, you can save 30-50%.

Cheers!!

Brad

Most of the companies I work for have Dell - the rest usually go for Compaq.

Do you guys have MESH computers in the states? They kick fucken ass. You should take a look at Fujitsu machines too, I've had one for the past two years and it's rock solid.

I just bought this baby yesterday

Pentium 4 1.8GHz
256mb SDRAM
32mb TNT 2
40gb hdd, though I may add a second...
Philips 107E Monitor
DVD/CDRW
Windows XP & Works
Soundmax card & Creative labs speakers
Keyboard, mouse... heh

£799.99
that's about $1100 so it's the best deal I've seen, on account that they like to rape us on price over here.

I hooked the thing up with an old TV card and zip drive, now we're screaming. Plus they threw in an Epson C40+ USB Printer and Visioneer USB scanner for free.

actually, the comp i have now is a DELL comp. As far as service goes, i would agree, they are the best by far. i bought it 3 years ago(600 mhz, paid fucking 3 grand for it. LoL)
during that 3 years, ive had the harddrive die once(sucked, lost all my data) and ive had the graphic card get fucked up also. Theyve replaced both for me immideatly. I was just wondering if there was any other brands that were comparable but cheaper. this baby still runs awsome, but gonna get a 2nd comp thats a bit faster, so i can run photoshop, flash, dreamweaver, image ready, cute ftp, and a mp3 player all at once. hehe. now that be cool
looks like the sentiment is to stick with them. thanx fellows

by the way, one thing ive heard is that its better to go with a top of the line graphic card, then to spend the money on geting the fastest processor. So getting a 1.5 GH proccessor and a geforce 3 is better for performance, vs getting a 2.0 GH proccessor with a TNT 2. Anyone else heard this?

Almost any system you buy anymore, you have to put up with their bull all over the system. Almost like AOL. Building your own system isn't that difficult and you get just what you want. One place that I thought was rather impressive is 499pc.com (no I'm not tied to them).. they have 1300Ghz barebones for $200.. and other nice little deals.. lifetime guarantee..

I just read what you people are buying, with add on's, go down to 3 or 4 stores, buy a mess of hardware and throw it together.

Some of you do some pretty good research.
Saves me a ton of time.
So I thank you.

Jim

Dell. No doubt.

I've had my P3 500 for 3/4 years, and its never failed. On top of all the other stuff already said here, the technical spec side of the Dell site kicks arse, and you can pretty much figure out how to do most mods just by checking there.

I build my own boxes but encourage my friends and family to buy there machines from someplace that they will actually take the machine to be service. All things being equal, the warranty is the most important thing to consider.
