Canon 20D VS Canon Digital Rebel

I'm going to be doing calendar shoots and softcore paysite style shoots and I was curious if the Canon Digital Rebel is "good enough".

I have been told by a few people that the 20D "blows away" the Digital Rebel and the two cameras are in far different leagues. Someone I know on another forum told me it's like comparing a throw-away 1 use camera to the Digital Rebel as compared to the Digital Rebel VS the 20D.

Any tips? I'm going to need a camera very soon as my shoots start in a few weeks, and I would like to get some practice.

same shit... they both use the same board and software, only on the rebel a few features are restricted... and there's a program u can upload into the rebel which opens those features up... with a good lense (rebel lense sux balls) you got yourself a great camera

I'm not a canon shooter. I'm a Nikon shooter, but avidly post on Photography forums daily, and the 20D is much better then the drebel...

My advice is, if you can afford the 20D, get that. But if your budgeting. Get the Drebel.

Be sure to follow either up with premium glass.... nothing can substitute a sharp lens.

Thanks for the heads up. I can get the Digital Rebel ( 1st model ) for $950 CND. What lens should I look at buying, how much is it, and where can I order one? ( Assuming I end up with the DR )

Thanks again!

A good photographer will take good photos with the Digital Rebel

A bad photographer will take bad photos with the Digital Rebel
A bad photographer will still take bad photos with the 20D

Neither camera will help with basic photo skills (lighting, composition etc)

Equipment helps (a great deal at times)
BUT
Basic skills are more important than what the camera might be.

Can't go wrong with either for web work.
Becomes a matter of dollars ......

Sounds like I just need to pick a camera to use and practice with it.

It would just suck down the road if I was limited by the Digital Rebel in any way. How exactly is the 20D superior?

Just remember that as you practice, the 20D will be dropping in price, and new ones will be comming our. You can always ebay the rebel later and upgrade.

Good point, and if my new web ventures take off, I can just upgrade accordingly. ( Or sell out and hit up Wendy's Manager for a job... )

Do I REALLY need to get the DR a new lens, is the one that comes with the camera really that crappy?

I'm in Canada too and seen the price drop to $950cnd also.
But the new Canon EOS 350D / Digital Rebel XT is comming out soon.
This is suppose to replace the Digital Rebel 300D
Estimated street price is $999us. So it shouldn't be too badly priced Canadian.

I really wish I had a clue as to what to look for in a camera. Right now all I know is that I need a camera that can record pictures as fast as I can click, and at a high quality. Then there's lighting, but I'm not too worried since I'm going to get some real nice lights.

Great point!

It does become a matter of dollars...... pennies to people...

This image was shot using my Nikon D70 w/ 50mm 1.4D Lens, reflector and Fill in Soft box flash..

Like everyone is saying, as well as yourself, is to practice. A DSLR camera isn't an easy thing to learn right off the bat....

it's a matter of preference... you can go back and forth all day and you still won't get the answer to which is 'better'.... best thing for you is to go out to the store and test them all out and see which works for you... check the weight, grip, navigation, features, loading, screen, outputs, features...etc..

You mentioned not wanting to limit yourself with features.....Get the 20D. We've been over this issue on GFY time and time again and I'm personally tired of posting about it.

The Rebel is a piece of shit...IMHO. If that's the price point that you are looking at then you may want to stick with the Nikon D70 but if you can spend the extra bucks....Go with the 20D.

Hit me up on ICQ if you would like more info.

If you get the new 350 Digital Rebel XT it virtually same features necessary for most users.

The main difference besides a few extra features which you won't end up using anyway are the construction. The 20D is designed for professional constant use where as teh Rebel is designed for prosumer use. So if you plan on shooting all day long 7 days a week you're better off getting the 20D.

The picture quality is the same. Get a high end lens.

I am an avid fan of the 300D Rebel. (And as coincidence would have it, I too am in Canada).

And there is no point arguing which camera takes better shots..Canon Rebel or Nikon70D. Some people like the saturation better on the Canon..some on the Nikon. I obviously sway towards Canaon.

One advantage Canon has over Nikon...the Rebel lets you shoot at 100 ASA. Nikon, the lowest is 200 ASA. You won't notice a whole lot of difference in the noise...but might when you create much larger images.

The advantage Nikon has over the Canon...instant on. Canon takes about 3 seconds before the first shot can be taken. But once on, neither have any delay. And the Nikon is a bit better at shooting rapid frames.

But I have wandered off topic...both the Rebel and the 20D are nice pieces of equipment. I have a large number of photos listed on the stock photo site, www.istockphoto.com...all of them taken with my Rebel 300D...most with the out-of-the-box lens and a cheaper 70 - 300mm Canon lens.(about 300 CDN).

If it's a question of money..go for the 300D.

Disclaimer..I do not shoot any studio photos..all of my stuff is mainstream "art shots" and commercial advertising images.

Well, I know AaronM shoots some real good stuff, and Makingcoin's stuff looks great too.

If the pros are using the 20D, I think I will follow the trend. $2100 bucks Canadian is the price at the Future shop near my igloo in Canada. Anyone have a cheaper price at a reliable store/person/ebay'er?

Thanks for all the advice people. Huge thanks. The guy at Future shop tried to sell me a $500 dollar Sony camera.

Look, good tools HELP, thats all. If you don't know how to use your tools, don't waste the money. Technology is great, but: learn how to take a proper, well lit, well comp'd, photo. Otherwise you just have a big picture that cost a lot.

Yup! That's why I want to buy the camera and get a lot of practice in. I reeeaaaalllly can't stand bad lighting in adult movies or pictures either. It is the most distracting thing in the photo. Well, maybe a TV on in the background of a picture showing Santa Claus hammering the Easter Bunny in the ass could be more distracting, but you probably won't see that in any of my pics.

I assume the 20D is a good enough camera to produce a calendar with, correct me if I'm wrong.

This is the same reason that I think Glocks are shitty too.

Let's make a deal......

I can pick it up for you here for just over $1,800 Canadian or $1,500 usd. It would give me an excuse to take another road trip to Vancouver if you can wait until after the Phoenix show.

I just got the 10D. I picked one up, used...listen bro - I just had a total pro guy come spend 2 hours with me to learn f-stops back and forth and light metering and light temps...as well as stobes.

If you're going the way of strobes, I'd ante up a few more bucks and go one step higher than the Rebel, IMO.

glock is junk.. HK's are my favorite...... and for you 'photographers' out there just starting out, if you dont have the eye for to capture a good shot you can use all the expensive equipment you want, i'll still own you with a one time use camera.... don't waste ur time and hire a pro

The 20d has serious focusing issues. It consistently backfocuses no matter what lens you put on it. I've tried it with all 7 of my canon lenses and it backfocuses on every one.

I really wanted to get one... but even the freakin' store display models were backfocusing. The 10D definately had a problem that canon was well aware of, but apparently they never completely fixed it in the 20D.

Do a search at DPREVIEW and you'll find that many people have had this problem.

I just got the new rebel xt and so far it's worked great. Some people don't like how small it is and that you have to hold down 2 buttons to change the aperture. But I've gotten consistently good results. Razor sharp focus and excellent color balance. My main lens is the 24-70 L series so that helps a bit

..it is true that SOME 20D cameras have backfocus problems, so take care and buy yourself from a store where you can change the equipment if it's not OK...
...prepare to spend a few thousand bucks on L glass if you want printing quality...
... forget 300D, or 350D, they are GREAT amateur cameras, not becouse of the quality of the photos but becouse of the build quality, the image might equal the 20D, but the shutter on those 2 has some 20.000 actuations lifespan, good enough for someone that takes 100 photos / month, but hey, i take about 500 pics every day, i am moving towards the Canon MarkII, so i won't have to change my damn shutter every few months...

While on topic, what is a good replacement lens to buy for my D70? I've been using it a fair amount and other than listening to the camera shop turnover employees would like a real answer. I need minimal zoom for the most part, Shooting outdoors.

BUT
Basic skills are more important than what the camera might be.

Can't go wrong with either for web work.
Becomes a matter of dollars ......
True enough.

If you wear out a camera you just go and buy a new one.

I don't get why so many people knock prosumer cameras.
