A cockatiel flew up and landed on my screen door, need advice!!!

Okay this is getting a little strange!!!

Last week a cockatiel flew up and landed on my screen porch, so I put a box over him as he was hanging on the screen so he wouldn't fly away and I could find out where he belonged!!!

Well after knocking on doors and putting a flyer out no one has claimed him. So I borrowed a big rabbit cage from a friend and bought some bird things and put together a little cage for him.

Here are a few more pics of the little guy:

My kitties are really enjoying him too!!!

This is his favorite treat to eat and the only thing he ate for the first 4 days after he found me!!!

Now he is starting to eat the bird food I got him, and I have given him about 5 baths with this 8 in One Bath stuff because he was pretty rough looking and the skin under his eye was cut. That stuff has healed him up in one week. It helps with skin irritations. He is almost a new bird. Every time I bath him I will turn on the blow dryer and he climbs from where ever he is in the cage to the blow dryer and hangs on the cage with his wings up and hooks his bill on the cage and falls asleep it's so cute!!!

BUT HE IS DRIVING ME CRAZY WITH HIS SCREAMS!!! I love animals and I will do anything for them but this little fucker is on my last nerve. He does all these cute little songs and dances that just crack me up, but if he hears a siren or a car alarm he starts screaming. Sometimes for no reason he will just start screaming so I did some research and read that I should not react because that is attention and will keep him doing it, so I just cover his cage with a light sheet and wait for a minute or two after he stops screaming and then uncover him. I have been doing this for a week and it doesn't seem to be working. Will this ever stop??? He isn't figured trained so if I finger train him will that help end the screams??? I am willing to try anything. I tell him all the time I soooooo see why someone let his little ass go!!! haha But I would never do that!!!

Please help!!! I am going crazy!!!

YARGH! I don't know much about any birds, even parrots (go figure) but this quote literally knocked me off my chair.

Good luck with the little guy, he's cute.

Nice looking bird. I have an african grey myself, and the best advice I can give is this.

Garlic and butter. Make a paste, and stuff the bird. cook about 20 min in the oven on 325.

I LOVE African Grey's. I have always wanted one, but after this little guy I don't know if I could do it. So I am glad he found me. I would have just sat and cried every time he screamed if I spent thousands on him!!!

That reminded me of a joke I read a while ago:

A man received a parrot for his birthday. The parrot was fully grown with a bad attitude and worse vocabulary. Every other word was an expletive. Those that weren't expletives were, to say the least, rude.

The man tried hard to change the bird's attitude and was constantly saying polite words, playing soft music, anything he could think of. Nothing worked. He yelled at the bird, and the bird got worse. He shook the bird and the bird got madder and ruder. Finally, in a moment of desperation, he put the parrot in the freezer.

For a few moments he heard the bird squawking and kicking and screaming, and then, suddenly, there was quiet.

The man was frightened that he might have actually hurt the bird and quickly opened the freezer door. The parrot calmly stepped out onto the man's extended arm and said: "I'm sorry that I might have offended you with my language and actions and ask for your forgiveness. I will endeavour to correct my behaviour."

The man was astounded at the bird's change in attitude and was about to ask what had changed him ..........when the parrot continued: "May I ask what the chicken did?"

I think there is a pet store that tells people to drop their unwanted animals and the Loryn reffuge. All on the down low of course.

Yeah, I remember him well. I think the word is out about you in the homeless animal community. I'm a sucker too. I have a soft spot for injured animals. I always stop and pick them up and then end up paying a nice fat vet bill.

I wish I had a bigger place and more money so I could have more animals...not that my cat would approve of that.

He doesn't want anything to do with the outside of the cage. I even leave the door to the cage open for him. I am trying to finger train him now. Every morning and in the evening I sit with my hand in the cage and don't move it for 15 minutes and talk to him. They say that is the best way to get him use to your hand and then you can slowly start to pick him up. I have tried everything, talking to him, paying a lot of attention to him, because they said he could be bored, but nothing helps!!!

One day he was so good and didn't scream at all, just made his cute little chirps and noises with his little dances, and I thought wow my training is working!!! Then right when it started raining, and it has been raining none stop, he started screaming again even worse than before. Does the weather effect them like it will my kitties sometimes???

I really want to make him a good bird and get him finger trained so it is easier to find him a good home!!!

Yeah I don't think it would be a good idea to let the birdie fly around!!! But it would solve the whole screaming thing that is for sure!!!

I owned one for quite a while . . . no, he isn't going to stop screaming any more than you are going to stop doing whatever it is you naturally do.

He is imitating the siren.

Cover his cage at night when you want him to shut up and sleep

You wouldn't have the screeching problem with a Norwegian Blue - good birds they are, although somewhat melancholic as they are always pining for the fjords.

May as well make some coin off the wailing fowl...ever consider a site like SaveToby?

Well the good thing is that he doesn't scream through the night at all. It's just during the day!

Oh well I guess I will just have to finger train him and find him a a good home to someone who understnads the screaming.

Nice looking bird, pretty plumage means he was getting a good diet before he got away or was turned out (grrr.)

The screaming may fade with time, but it sounds like he has specific triggers -- and unfortunately some screaming is normal flock behavior for many birds. Sometimes it may actually help to call back to him (softly and calmly) when he screams -- if it's flock behavior, he may be reassured when the call is answered by his flock (you), and calm down.

The African Grey I lived with for several years did not scream at all. He whistled for attention, or rang like the telephone. If they are well treated, Greys are *very* calm birds. Cockatiels, generally not so much.

WOW that sounds so right. He screams at the birds outside all the time. Geese fly by, sea gulls did the other day, and the regular back yard birds and he screams every time he hears them. So when he hears the sirens or car alarms he might think it's another bird? So I should just maybe call to him calmly after each time he screams? Now if that is it I am going to feel so bad for covering him up. He was crying for his friends and I cover him.

Okay I am going to try this. Thank you for the tip on the African too. I really wanted one of those guys and this little guy pushed me away from that idea. Now I am opened up to it again!!!

that's funny! The cats will eat him/her though. I'd suggest a bigger cage cause that one is really small.

Well the kitties are well behaved. They don't even pay attention to him anymore.

The cage is a rabbit cage I borrowed from a friend. I found him last week, so I haven't really formed a planned as to what I am going to do with him. The only thing I know is I want to get him fingered trained and break this screaming this as much as I can. I am going to try the calling back to him when he screams thing tonight and see what happens!!!

I will probably end up getting a used cage so when I am finding him a good home it will be easier if he has stuff to go with him. I found some pretty good bird cages with stands on top for him to sit outside of the cage too. I wish I could get him a nice new big cockateil cage but I just can't afford that right now. I like the hanging ones so he hangs from the ceiling. I am sure he would love that!!! Maybe I can find a used one!!!

a cockateil flew up to my mothers shoulder outside 10 years ago ... still squaking happily at her house ... we have no idea how old he is. she got another one, but it died after about 7 years (mom bought it as a baby).

for all i know the one who landed on my moms shoulder is 100 years old

they can be very affectionate sometimes - i was amazed about it ... some of them will crawl up on your chest and let you rub their neck ...

You know, its kinda funny but...

The cockateil doesn't even know it but it hit the birdie lotto by fortuitously flying into your screen door =)

Instead of having to brave the natural elements, he gets to be pampered and live a virtual birdie heaven in your nice warm safe cribbo... (cept for the cats that probably scare the shit out of him =)
