WTF is The Netherlands?

This has pissed me off for a long time now

Is The Netherlands a country, a region or what?

What the fuck is "dutch"? Is that a language or a place or a medical condition?

Just kidding.. seriously, I don't know the relationship between, say "Holland", "The Netherlands" and "Dutch".

Would someone care to educate me on this? I think - Amsterdam is a city in Holland which is in The Netherlands where people are Dutch, and speak Dutch.

Or is The Netherlands a region in Holland?

Ok - I'm confused.

Thanks

The Netherlands is a kingdom. Holland is in the kingdom along with Aruba, Bonair and Curacao. They speak Dutch.

Actually, what has me interested is I just found out that my grandfather on my dad's side is Dutch. So I have a Dutch name. So I'm at least 1/4 Dutch. We always thought it was Austrian or German. Interesting. It's not an obviously German or Dutch name.

Read that.
And they're right.

But people mean they same thing when they mention Holland or The Netherlands --> the country itself.

Dutch is our language alright, but I believe it's the English speaking people that came up with it.

We call it 'nederlands' ('netherlands', seems logical doesn't it?)
Like Germany language is called 'German'.

So for the record of all the assholes that go like this:

-"I'm Dutch!"
"Aaah...you're German!?!"

No dammit. Dutch is NOT the same as Deutsch, which is what the Germans call their own language(Germany->Deutschland. Germans speak "Deutsch")

Pronounciation.
Deutsch: Doitsch
Dutch: Datch

FINALLY see the difference?

I've always known the difference between Deutsch and Dutch. The German language never entered into this. We always thought we were of German descent. But, someone in nmy family just traced the records back, and it turns out my Grandfather's relatives migrated to the US from Holland.

The name is "Beer", but the original spelling may be different.

That's a very famous name. De Beers was founded by the Dutch and they completely control the diamond trade. They don't have an office in the States because they'd be sued for anti-trust.

This thread must only confuse you more. Let me clue you in.

When people talk about Holland or The Netherlands, they mean the same thing. They refer to the country, located next to Germany and Belgium. Dutch is the language and the people are called "the Dutch".

So where does the confusion come from? A long time ago we conquered some islands. They all belong to "The Kingdom Of The Netherlands". However, The Netherlands itself, it the country.

Don't look at that Wikipedia link about "Holland". Yes, it's true that there are 2 of the 12 provinces in The Netherlands called "South-Holland" and "North-Holland", and combined they make "Holland", but that is NOT what ppl refer to when they talk about Holland. They refer to the country. Forget that province crap.

Your name comes from Bier witch is Beer. Some will say it will come from Bear but thats not right.

We do believe it's originally "Bier".

We always thought is was German or Austrian.. pretty interesting to find out it's Dutch.

LOL Now the Dutch language is even starting to confuse me, hehe.

"beer" in Dutch, means "bear" in English.
"bier" in Dutch, means "beer" in English.

grumpy is probably right though, your name is most likely be derived from the Dutch word "bier". Or it might just mean "bear".

LOL Dutch sucks.

You're right. I wasn't saying don't look at Wikipedia. I was saying "don't look at that Wikipedia link about Holland". It's better to check out the Wikipedia link about The Netherlands.

God so much confusion in this thread. I think I forgot who I am now.
