And how would a blind person see the link in this message and click on it?

You're still thinking visually. Most web pages are just words with embedded layout instructions that are redundant if you're just after the basic content. I presume their software assigns a unique identifier to links so that they can press 1 for the first link, 2 for the second, and so on.

Earthlink probably got sued by some blind guy, claiming he is unable to send emails, he won, and now earthlink has to include it on that page....

Ok, for the sake of argument let's say that is the case. Why bother having text on a page that a blind person cannot see? "Visually impaired? Click here" I still say WTF?

christ - are most of you totally out of it??

blind people are able to use the computer just as well..

IBM has a whole department dedicated for those who are visually impared. from brail keyboards to reading text off the monitor either using voice recognition software to brail keypads that translate the text off the screen

I was part of the IBM testing software for them 15 years ago on the voice recognition software - my computer basically learned to hear my voice and talked to me - told me what was on the screen - I simply had to say certain key words for it to actually surf.

That's another one I've always wondered about! Even on the walk-up ATM's. Have you ever used an ATM that you didn't have to interact with the CRT display? If you can't see what the CRT display is prompting you to do then you don't know what buttons to push on the keypad, braille or not.

i used to run a cybercafe back in 98, a blind guy comes in, 3 1/2 floppy in hand, sat at one of the terminals, and started looking for the drive, he installed a text to speech thing using the keyboard by memory (windows key, execute, cmd, a:\something.exe etc.) i tried to help him but he basically told me to fuck off. that day i've learnt wtf were ALT tags useful for in images

It's nice to see that somebody knows what they are talking about. They also have braille displays for computers.

It's not like people are so stupid that they have braille on drive up ATM's or anything....oh wait....

Ok, for all the people who can't seem to grasp this issue. I fully understand that visually impaired people are able to use computers too. However, if a person is blind they will not be able to read the text "Visually impaired? Click here". That being said, now answer this question: Why is it displayed on the screen?

True. Wouldn't it be easier if a .wav sounded?

You're not making any sense. We've already established that blind people can read webpages, and they can traverse links through whatever mechanism their software uses. How is that link any different?

Several years ago I owned a company that developed a site for a local blind organization. I believe they had a software package called JAWS that read the text as audio. It was also designed to specifically locate links and certain key words.

It'd be cheaper to tell your programmer just to add the line rather than put some custom script that talks to whatever system the impared person happens to be using.

As with ATM machines, they all come with the braille from the factory before they're designated walk-up or drive-up. The kiosk around it might be specific to the duty, but the machine within is standard issue.

Are you guys seriously retarded?

Software reads the link to them.
They display the link to everybody
A) So that it doesn't accidentally not show for a blind person
B) So that everyone knows Earthlink is blind friendly
B2) So that they don't have some idiot try and sue Earthlink
