Before I was thinking about hosting my members movies on a seperate domain and server than the actual member area index. But it seems like there is some complexities involved with doing this.

The reason I wanted to do this was I was thinking that it might be a bad idea if the members area movies which are very bandwidth intensive were hosted on the same server where my paysite tour and my member area index is hosted.

But now I am wondering, is it really a bad idea? What is the IDEAL setup?? Is it actually better if I hosted EVERYTHING (the paysite tour, the members area index page, and the members area movies) all on 1 domain and server?

Or would it be better to spread things out? I am looking for the BEST LONG TERM SOLUTION here.

I appreciate your help guys. It's because of the great information provided here that I visit GFY.

Host them on a seperate server that is 'round robined' with the server your tours are on.

We've had no problems doing this in the past.

Any half decent CMS will be able to manage that type of setup.

This is really, really simple to do. And yes, distributing the content is a smart move.

and once again, my main question is what the best method is for hosting? Wether its better to spread things out or host EVERYTHING on the same server?

Spread out!

Have someone do (pretty easy) htaccess setup. I would guess that it wouldn't cost more than $100.

Spread / Share the resources being used across two servers instead of a single server.

Kind of like how you would walk across an iced over lake, you balance your weight across both feet so as not to put to much pressure on the ice with each step you take.

Same concept with having your servers on a round robin setup, they can both do the same thing but the 'load' on each is equally shared.

dude, if you can afford to, put your stuff on seperate servers. Trust me. And dns... round robin is a cheap way to send surfers to different servers... although why you need that I dont know. But just splitting your members area up onto a different server then the tour? So simple it's disgusting. Seriously

Ask your hosting company. You'll be done in 5 mins.

E Lee - round robin is not a load balancing solution. At all.

It is a nice and cheap trick and useful at times, but dont confuse people by calling it a load balancing solution - it's nowhere close to one.

What is it then?

Its about sharing the load being put on a specific ip/server at any given time, spreading the work across multiple servers instead of having a single server do everything.

Sure sounds like its 'balancing' out to me ;)

E Lee - it has nothing to do with load. It does redirect requests to the IP's specified... but that does not take load into account at all. If one server/IP goes down, you lose traffic. Proper load balancing is more intelligent then that.

I have nothing against round robin dns setup's - I have a few clients setup on them - but they are not a real load balancing solution.

Perhaps more a technical detail then anything. "Considering the functionality, the round robin DNS is not a load balancing mechanism but a load distribution option. " Ahhh, that's the wording I was looking for

Anyways, what this guy needs is not a load balancing situation anyways. He is merely trying to split up his members area to a different server.

For ease of management, I'd just setup a subdomain (members.mydomain.com) on the second server.... keep the tour and such on the one server... members area and passwd auth on the second. Basta.

Costs are relevent to what has to be done.

To give a cost without speaking to you and evaluating what it is your trying to accomplish and why is not in my best interest or yours.

Sounds like it and if this is the case any hopsting company should be able to do it within minutes... I did say SHOULD right ?

okay, great answers guys so far, I appreciate it.

I have decided to do what you guys suggest, which is to split up the members areas and tours and the videos. Here is how I would like to do it. Do you see any problem with this? And also is this something my host can do for me (its a managed server) or something I should have someone like JFP do?

SERVER 1: Paysite tour + Member area index and other member area pages.
SERVER 2: All the member Videos.

Is that best from a password management approach and anti hotlining and such? Or a different combination?

Your members area on another....

Your database ( php ) on another....

Load balance...and have back ups....

I have had it that way since day 1. Once you get it setup it all flows easily.
